Roberts is a CB that Derby played at LB.

He's being brought in here as a cb, not a LB.

We still retain an interest in signing a LB.

Do we? I’ve not read that anywhere other than what Hand of RO’D said about Bryan still being on.

Not necessarily sure if this is the case.

Previous thoughts in this thread were that he is, at a maximum, 6ft tall, if not a bit shorter. I also think Roberts' time at CB has often been on the left of a back 3, as oppose to as a 'traditional' CB.

Given Pearson's apparent preference for tall CBs (Atkinson 6'4, Dickie 6'5, Klose 6'4) and Roberts' recent history of playing at LB (and even LWB), I could easily see Roberts coming here to cover Pring as 2nd choice LB.

Don't get me wrong, perhaps he may play CB. but I wouldn't be so certain that that's why he's here. Personally, I'd be inclined to think of him as more of a LB.

I imagine he read this by Piercy at BP

“It will be interesting to see how Pearson uses Roberts with Jay Dasilva departing on a free transfer to Coventry City and City’s intended move for Joe Bryan collapsing, leaving Cam Pring as their only recognised left-back.

But, equally, Rob Atkinson is the club’s only orthodox and specialist left-sided centre-back, with Kal Naismith increasingly deployed in midfield, and the 24-year-old isn’t due back until November following an ACL injury meaning Roberts could take on that role.

The Robins are said to still hold an interest in AFC Wimbledon left-back Jack Currie, after three bids were rejected in January, which increasingly indicates that Roberts is being considered primarily as a centre-back alongside Atkinson, Zak Vyner, Dickie and Tomas Kalas, although the Czech Republic international is yet to agree on fresh terms with his contract expiring in just over two weeks.”

What’s worth mentioning too, is that we’ve bought in 3 players that’ll be on pretty solid wages (Dickie and McCrorie especially), yet I’d bet we’re still a way in the green still when comparing what’s being spent on them compared to what Bentley and JD combined wage would’ve been. Value being minutes on the pitch and all that.

27 pages for McCrorie

14 for Dickie

10 for Roberts

I think with a bit of the rub of the green , some luck and a good wind behind us then there's every chance we can improve on our final position this season.

We are where we are and I have no doubt  that BT & NP are doing everything they can despite their hands tied behind their backs but I'm struggling to feel any deep excitement about these signings. Thank Eff for the Academy players otherwise it's just deja vu of equivalent signings back in the 3rd Division average team days.

We need a real spark or two in the team. Much as I think that Harry Cornick has been unfairly singled out- I don't think he's more than a useful club in the bag.

If Scott goes then we will be desperate to add some real creativity but as things look then we're just going to be a bang average team with some great days and some dire days but no cigar.       IMO    .

It's your opinion so I respect that however what a bleak outlook you convey.

You maybe right and time will tell but let's look at the signings we've made so far.

McCrorie - Named player of the year the season before last, Scotland international, reportedly beat West Brom to his signature and has plenty of experience to bolster a couple of positions.

Dickie - Past player of the year at Oxford and then onto QPR again player of the year mixed success thereafter due to QPR's decline, reportedly was a target for Premier league clubs not too long ago with a value of 10 mil, again plenty of experience.

Roberts - Represented England at multiple youth ages, Good academy background and Derby fans seem gutted we've snapped him up.

These all are in the building and its the middle of June. I agree we do need more creativity or energy but we've definitely improved the team so far.

So bang average and an improvement of this season's finish is a bleak outlook?

Bang average even with the improved confidence, structure cohesiveness and retaining Scott? Really?

Remember too Scott if he stays will be playing in a strengthening, improving side- with a more settled structure and shape, and some better players/depth around him.

Regarding Roberts natural position, sounds like he is a bit like Bailey Wright. Centre back by trade but can do a job at fullback if need.

Sounds like a great signing in terms of both the present and the future.

Bailey Wright is also 6ft but people are writing this guy off as a CB for being 6ft...

This guy played his whole youth career at CB yet played one season as LB and for some that means we're signing him as a LB.

I see it as we want to bring in another LB and that Roberts will provide cover for LB if for whatever reason they were both unavailable. I think considering our recent injury problems, that's quite a sensible approach.

If we don't manage to sign another left back this transfer window then Roberts will be the short term cover until we do.

Upset is a bit strong, he had a long chat with Tinns and explained his reservations and reasons, he was disappointed but understood and accepted them.

Fair enough Port, accept what you say - I was referring to a post from our resident (and reliable) 'intheknower, Shaggy...

Im not convinced that these 3 signings with move us up 10 places in the league, especially if scott goes, but if he stays, and with conway and bell being another year more developed, then top half ought to be achievable,, and as per this season if its tight theres not much between 10th and 6th?

I assume Brighton are going to release their retained list today but we've been in discussions with them about compensation (given he's under 24 and assuming they offered a contact) and have come to an agreement.

Brighton haven’t offered him a new contract, therefore, no compensation is required. It’s a free transfer.

Sounds OK to me at this stage, just about every club has dire days over a season.

You seem to have forgotten Mehmeti though and that if Scott goes plans will almost certainly be in place replace him with another creative player.

Anyone expecting City to improve enough to make the play offs is being unrealistic.

It's not completely out of the question though and that in itself is something to be positive about.

We're definitely going in the right direction under Nige, time to relax a bit and just enjoy watching the club improve in a very competitive division.

If Scott stays then that's an entirely different scenario.

My opinion on us having an average team is based on having sold Semenyo and the likely departure of Scott. The two players likely worth more than the entire squad combined.

How very fascinating that there were a huge number on here last season accusing the players who are still at the club as stealing a living ( which I vocally disagreed with) and suddenly the latest unacceptable comment is suggesting  we will improve on last season's position with an average team. Plenty of time for that to change but apologies if not being deeply excited about any of the new signings is offensive to some.

My feeling is that we did pretty well in what was a transition season, but injuries and fatigue caught up with a comparatively small squad at times. I think the players we have signed give us the ability to be more flexible, fresher and show more patience with some of our academy who were used before they were ready.

I would like to think that this would find us that 12 points we need to get into the play off picture.

Scott is a one off, that's clear, so the club seem to be taking a moneyball approach to life without him by signing players who can, between them, replace parts of his game. Defensive player in McCrorie, Mehmeti for dribbling skills and hopefully they have a locksmith type in the pipeline like Knight or A N O.

Defensive signings are never going to deeply exciting. What these signings so far allow us to do though is having the ability to play our better players in their best positions. No more playing Pring at CB, no more Scott filling in at RWB etc etc.

You can’t judge what the state of the squad might look like if Scott was to go because a) he’s still here & b) we don’t know which players we have lined up with the money that Scott could potentially bring in.

A possible deal for Alex Scott? ?

This has crossed my mind, it certainly feels like Brighton are making this move as Easy as possible for both parties and makes me wonder if they are hoping it will smooth the way for another deal.
