We might not like some of the referees (with good reason), but I'm sure the quality decreases as you go down the pool. So the less refs available, the worse they'll collectively get. And could the problem have got worse over the last few years as some of the referees have been assigned to VAR instead of reffing games? What happens when ChatGPT or google BART AIs get assigned to referee our games? I mean, we'll probably get more pens, but I'm sure there's going to be a downside.
