Port Said Red
My wife is a big Corrie fan, it's on when I am online here or elsewhere. Every now and then something happens that makes me watch. Usually it's anything that involves Roy Cropper, a character that seems to be from an Alan Bennett play parachuted into a soap opera. But Maureen Lipman showed how a top actor can take a standard script and move it to another level In tonight's episode. She is involved in a row with her junkie daughter (played by Claire Sweeney) and it was 5 minutes of absolute quality from both of them. These things are rare in my experience of soap opera's the one I remember most was the June Brown (Dot Cotton) monologue episode, an absolute tour de force and an incredibly daring episode for any soap opera to focus solely on one character for a whole episode. I hadn't seen Eastenders for many years and haven't watched it since, but it was trailed as this amazing piece of television and it was rightly billed as such. If you like to see top actors at work, I recommend either of them.
