ExiledAjax
375 offences is a lot. I wonder what category they fall in and whether he's got any mitigating elements to it. Will be interesting how it all compares to Toney's case.

Monkeh
Has he got a gambling problem? Should we be mocking that regardless of player? Or should there be help available for people with these problems?

Probably around the time the Authorities started looking into it. Barton got an 18 month ban in 2017 which probably put wind up a lot of players and they stopped the betting.. True - but if you actively celebrate an opposite teams player getting sent off in the way he did, then he needs to take the rough with the smooth.

BS3City
No knowing if he was celebrating in the picture as he had a bet on a red card. It was certainly during the period in question. Just saying...

SBB
How does the F.A obtain the information? Are betting records publicly available or do players have to give permission/consent to them accessing them?

Fordy62
Certainly seems the more successful and famous you get, the more likely you are to be subject to scrutiny. If he was still playing for Swindon would this have come to light? Doubt it.

Some of the heaviest penalties have been handed out to players none of us have ever heard of. It would have come to light, maybe not reported on BBC Sport, but yes it would likely have been investigated.

That could be a mitigating factor that reduces his punishment. Age itself is not a mitigating factor but the "experience of the Participant" is taken into account, with less experienced players receiving more leniency. Suppose it’s not newsworthy if they play for insignificant league one teams - the blue few for example. But I suppose they’re not into betting, they like harder stuff like woman beating.

But I suppose they’re not into betting, they like harder stuff like woman beating. Quite. But on a serious note - just in June 2023 there were 5 betting charges brought by the FA against players for such famous outfits as Olympique Mayonnaise FC (Daniel Bohan), Bradford City FC (Harry Chapman whilst playing for Blackburn Rovers), two players from Middlesex Arms FC, and Dorchester Town (Harvey Bradbury, 454 bets placed between May 2019 and Feb 2023). Then in the last year or so there have been the cases of Kynan Isaac (Stratford Town FC, 347 bets of a low £value, but very seriously betting on red cards (which was considered to be match-fixing) and Isaac showed no remorse or co-operation, 12 year ban, £5,000 fine) and Kenny Amor, chairman/part-owner of Eastleigh FC (nearly 14,000 bets placed across 8 seasons totalling £235,000 staked and £38,200 lost. 40 month ban, £1,000 fine). So there are some huges cases out there, but they don't get reported in the press. Players like Toffolo and Toney get the headlines because they are big names and play for high profile clubs. Toney was a a big case and his punishment was pretty hefty. Without knowing the details of Toffolo's charges I'd expect he's looking at something around a 6 month ban and a 5 figure fine. However if, as people are joking about here, if any of these bets concern Toffolo himself getting carded, then the Isaac case suggests the FA will consider that to be match-fixing and would recommend starting the sentence at a life time ban, which could then be reduced through mitigation. The FA publish all of their charges and decisions here FA Disciplinary: suspensions, written reasons, Fair Play (thefa.com)
