What are you reading on holiday?

Currently, chilling on holiday in Majorca, and my poolside book is ‘Our journey back to the heart of the game, class of 92 out of our league’ which tells the story of Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Nicky Butt investing in Salford City FC.

It’s a bit of a repetitive read, but there are two stand-out comments for me. Firstly, Gary Neville speaks a lot about the importance of creating and connecting an academy with every other element of a club, rather as we have done recently with the HPC, he makes a compelling argument for the benefits of such a connection, in essence, stressing that if young players spend their days alongside experienced professionals they learn very good habits.

There’s also a section about “marginal gains“ and GN notes how overrated this concept is in the English game. Neville stresses the importance of top class coaching being far more important as this is the backbone of any player development, marginal gains are merely that very, very marginal differences, which rather blows a hole in LJ’s philosophy!

Alan Bennett tells of a friend who once gave a talk titled The joys of reading. He was amazed to see Sir John Betjeman in the audience.

At the end he gushed his thanks to Betjeman for being there. To which Sir John replied "Oh don't thank me dear boy, I only came because I thought it was The joys of Reading."

Does GN's opinion "blow a hole" in any manageras ideas/theories..?

I wouldn't have thought his record stood up well enough to make his opinion mean alot & his one real role model & inspiration (SAF) was the absolute master of marginal gains & mind games -.

Stating that top class coaching is more important is hardly an earth shattering  view point.

Marginal gains are just that - marginal..!
