1) Its only 3 games into the season but does anyone think that possibly heffernan was a wrong decision? i know, i know its only 3 games into the season, and i do hope heffernan scores 20+ goals this season, but what if lita continues to score, Miller does a great job as a target man and gillespie does brilliant as well, which i believe he is more than capable of. And we finish into midtable obscurity. Retrospectively wouldnt it have been more wise to buy a midfielder or defender seeing as we lost aaron brown and carey, and given our younger players a chance, i.e. Lita and Gillespie.

2) I think there is some what of a Curse on us, everytime we sign an apparant Great player, they seem to come here, settle in, in the safety of their high wages, play inconsistently and then leave for next to nothing, and then turn up as class acts at a different club. Perhaps they are at the works every night, or just relax on the high wages we give them. Or perhaps they think its an easy life down south.

3) I'm not criticising our current forwards cus i think we have a talented bunch, but isnt it annoying that clubs like the gas. swindon, brighton, sign up relatively unknown stikers, sometimes from Prem or Conference and they turn out to be gems for our division anyway, Parkin, Knight for example. THe other day Wigan beat west ham 2-1 and guess who the scorers were? Zamora, Ellington and Roberts. Although this is probably more a blow to the gas than us, doesnt it just annoy u that we never seem to get these good players for next to nothing, and we spend loads on forwards who dont do as good a job. I think we do have a talented bunch in Heffernan, Gillespie, Lita and Miller. Gillespie in particular i think could become a surpreme goal scorer at this level and the Championship. Lets hope they get a good amount first team action, which they are so all is good (i guess).

4) Does anyone think that Fortune looks like a class act (most of the time), the final ball could be slighlty better, but if he improves this, which he should with first team action he will be our best player. He remind me of Viera, and if played the same way i think he would be our Galactico.

5) A commanding centre half in the same standard as Taylor was, (very very hard to find at this level we all know), and a Leon Knight type player, quick small, good finisher, would pretty much guarantee us 1st or 2nd? All we seem to sign apart from our current forwards, is big slow players. or average ssized unskilfull players is all we seem to sign. I have confidence in our attack and midfield this year, alot infact, but defensively we look abit weak, no leftback in same league as Bell (in his day), Brennan, Barnard, that we seem to have had for many seasons, A right back who isnt a strong defensively as Carey was, but better going forward. And no commanding central defender to partner our bristolian.

Tell me what u think, dont just say moan moan moan because i gave an opinion that was good and bad i believe.

Welcome to the forum

Nice first post and you have made some good points, Lita will start every game i expect, Tinman loves him, I think too that we can expect Miller to feature strongly this season too.

Clayton is a player with a big future, dont listen to what anyone else says, he really needs a full season to shine butand we hope to see a lot more of his talents in coming games.

If as you feel Miller can do a great job & Gillespie does a brilliant one then I doubt mid-table obscurity will be our end result.Regarding the loss of A Brown & Carey remember a couple of our recent signings were a specialist full-back and a midfielder.Coupled with our already large squad, and the liklihood of rapid development from Fortune, and the hoped for return of Amankwah then on a personnel front things look pretty well set.

Hefferman can certainly point to the stats.and prove his case, however Tinnion has such a wealth of attacking options that exercising them is only natural at this early stage.

Guest Big Si

Nice post, I too have felt like this when I have been wollowing over a pint of rough.

The only strikers I can remember making money on are Akinbiyi and Cole.

My old man has been watching City since the late 50's, and he says the same. We buy in good players for decent money, they start off with a bang, and it all gradually goes to pot and they peter out into mass of obscurity.

Ps, do we all remember when we sold super bob for £300k when West Brom said they would pay a million?

Si.

I do think that in part a players drop in form can be to do with our home crowd.

We do seem over the last few years to get on our players backs when things aren't going well and I think that can have an effect on how the players perform in future games.

I know alot of the frustration fans have with the players is through our desperate desire to get out of this bloody division but the abuse that some players get can't help us much.

I remember one of the best times we had when the crowd never got on the players backs so much was when Danny Wilson first came to the mangers post and we started to play more of our youth players like Coles, Hill, Burnell, Brown and the like.

We seemed to understand that these were young players who needed to get to grips with 1st team football and we supported them to the hilt.

I belive we are in that situation again with even more young players and a young manager who now more than ever need us to again support them to hilt and not getting on there backs

I belive we have a very good squad who will quickly gel together and with our support will race up this table to get automatic promotion.

I know we signed Orr which is a major coup for us i believe, but isnt he a different position to Mr Brown? After years of a strong left side, we are perhaps lacking in the section which has delighted us year after year. I might get slaughtered for this but I'd rather have Carey (or a Carey-esk player) than Smith, who in his own right is a good player, but too attack minded for my liking. The stability of a sold right back and one possibly two centre halfs and an attacking left back has always seemed to benefit us the best. They seemed to perform better when next to the Dolman, and Murray in his best season also when playing down the right. seemed to play better when next to the Dolman. Although i dont know what this says about the Williams.

I also remember a time in division one when we had a very good strike force, but were still relegated. So even if our strikers do great, doesnt guarantee promotion. I think alot of people are concerned with our defensive frailties this season, as we have a pot of gold upfront.

Ialways seemed to notice this but didn't know wether it was cos he was attacking towards the atyeo. Or maybe it was because he was furthest away from the manager?

Who knows, but it did seem to happen.

I always thought it was because we generally attack the Atyeo Stand end in the second half, and Scott is more effective against tiring defenders towards the end of games.

Also, teams do tend to prefer to play towards their home supporters in the second half. Presumably they feel it helps them as the game goes on and a goal might be needed (No, that isn't a cue for an East End debate).
