1960maaan
Yes, sculpture not statue. Some of you may know this, but new to me . There's a bloke who does some great local stuff, novel , walks and he did the Weird Bristol books that are full of little explanations of things around the City. This popped up on Instagram and is new to me. The sculpture on the Harbourside, that I have walked past hundreds of times, is Titled "Atyeo" in honour of the great man. Stephen Cox was the Sculptor . The Insta post is below. 7 2 1

I'd like to see his workings!

I'll stop and have a proper look next time I'm passing.

Well , obviously, it's a representation of the fortitude and dynamism of John Atyeo, the sculptors hero 1
SydneyCity
My educated guess based on the description given… It’s a ball hitting a sheet that’s been hanging on a washing line . It reflects the sculptors childhood memories of playing as Atyeo in his back garden. Scoring a goal and likely getting told off by his mum, but the thrill of it was worth it. 2

GrahamC
I think the statue is named after him because he was the sculptor’s hero rather than the actual sculpture being in any way a representation of him or anything about him.

spudski
@phantom https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/atyeo-284248 Makes sense...globe, river, sea. It's what historically Bristol did...travelled the globe from up the river to the sea
