Anyone know before the flats were built what was on that land? Also is it a bowling green next to the flats win one of the photos?

There doesn't seem to be much at all before the flats. Close by were various warehouses and works buildings by Duckmoor Road. The bowling green appears to be as old as the original ground, which was a football and cricket ground (without stands) in the 1920s. Previous to that, the Town Plan map of 1879-88 shows the whole place was open fields and Colliter's Brook used to run under what is now the Lansdown Stand.

For a detailed look, I will (once more) point anyone in the direction of the Know Your Place website https://maps.bristol.gov.uk/kyp/?edition=&ma

It has a wealth of old maps that you can swipe between them and a modern version.

Very early 60's, no floodlights (in the corners ).

Flats were completed in 1960.  Looks like Southbow was just being finished in the picture.

I think the flats went up in 62/63 and the floodlights were up in 65

Flats were 1960 I think. There's a plaque in the foyer of at least one of them

Almost as many pillars as the gash's new cowshed !

Seriously , never went in there , must have been like trying to watch a game from the cockpit of a Sopwith Camel .

Blimey, that 1930’s shot makes the Gate look more like an out of town ground, with the lack of housing around it.

Makes you think what could have been, if there had been a bit of money to buy up a little more of fhe surrounding land for potential future expansion.  I guess most clubs have been in a similar position in the past though.

When I started going regularly to home games I was 7 years old in 1968. I used to stand at the back of the old enclosure against the wall and stand on an old wooden box with my uncle. My grandad used to sit in the front row of the old stand right above us. Always worried his false teeth were going to come flying over the wall as he was ranting so much!

When I was about 12 I was allowed to go into the East End on my own. Magical

I moved to Ashton Road early in !960. Iirc, and it was a very long time ago, the tall building where Duckmoor Rd meets Ashton Rd was the Templecolour/Victor Latty photo lab and the open space where the flats were built was at least partly a large warehouse where Ashton Containers (Wwinterstoke Road) stored huge rolls of paper used in making the cigarette packets for Wills

Those floodlight pylons were a thing of beauty.

The best thing about the floodlights on pylons was it made finding grounds a doddle. Usually they were visible for some distance. Back in the days before Google Maps, you really didn't want to be asking someone on the street where the ground was...

Pretty sure that picture is Clifton Bridge station, Ashton Gate Halt was a far more basic affair.

Ashton Halt was essentially on the opposite side of Winterstoke Road to the retail park next to the ground. The station pictured is at the the end of Clanage Road where it meets Rownham Hill - labelled 'Ashton Gate' on the map.  I assume that 'Clifton Bridge' is situated where the railway tunnel is below the suspension bridge - although to be honest, I'm surprised there would be a station there. I certainly didn't notice anything there in the 70s when I used to walk up and down the line as a child.

You are correct, it is Clifton Bridge, and Ashton Gate was a very basic affair. I think it might even have been called Ashton Gate Platform. Entrance was  a lane to the right on the old Ashton Bridge, where underpass from Clanage  Road emerges. Both stops for the "Portishead Flyer"!!!

I remember in the mid 60's they used to run football specials from Stapleton Rd to  AG Halt .

I remember doing that , just the once . I think they tried it as a one off 1971 , maybe looking at redoing it.
