Also is it a bowling green next to the flats win one of the photos? There doesn't seem to be much at all before the flats. Close by were various warehouses and works buildings by Duckmoor Road. The bowling green appears to be as old as the original ground, which was a football and cricket ground (without stands) in the 1920s. Previous to that, the Town Plan map of 1879-88 shows the whole place was open fields and Colliter's Brook used to run under what is now the Lansdown Stand. For a detailed look, I will (once more) point anyone in the direction of the Know Your Place website https://maps.bristol.gov.uk/kyp/?edition=&ma It has a wealth of old maps that you can swipe between them and a modern version. 1

BS5_RED
When I see pics of the old stand, I always think its incredible how they were able to squeeze the dolman into such a tight spot.

Just found this view of the old stand , October 1964 Blimey, that 1930’s shot makes the Gate look more like an out of town ground, with the lack of housing around it. Makes you think what could have been, if there had been a bit of money to buy up a little more of fhe surrounding land for potential future expansion. I guess most clubs have been in a similar position in the past though.

harvey54
When I started going regularly to home games I was 7 years old in 1968. I used to stand at the back of the old enclosure against the wall and stand on an old wooden box with my uncle. My grandad used to sit in the front row of the old stand right above us. Always worried his false teeth were going to come flying over the wall as he was ranting so much! When I was about 12 I was allowed to go into the East End on my own. Iirc, and it was a very long time ago, the tall building where Duckmoor Rd meets Ashton Rd was the Templecolour/Victor Latty photo lab and the open space where the flats were built was at least partly a large warehouse where Ashton Containers (Wwinterstoke Road) stored huge rolls of paper used in making the cigarette packets for Wills

Ashton Halt was essentially on the opposite side of Winterstoke Road to the retail park next to the ground. The station pictured is at the the end of Clanage Road where it meets Rownham Hill - labelled 'Ashton Gate' on the map. I assume that 'Clifton Bridge' is situated where the railway tunnel is below the suspension bridge - although to be honest, I'm surprised there would be a station there. I certainly didn't notice anything there in the 70s when I used to walk up and down the line as a child.

You are correct, it is Clifton Bridge, and Ashton Gate was a very basic affair. I think it might even have been called Ashton Gate Platform. Entrance was a lane to the right on the old Ashton Bridge, where underpass from Clanage Road emerges. Both stops for the "Portishead Flyer"!!!
