Atalanta are a remarkable club and Gasperini an exceptional manager who doesn't get the limelight he deserves. Delighted for them both.

Should have beaten Juve in the Coppa Italia too.

In a way I was hoping Bayer Leverkusen given their treble failure in 2002 would do it but delighted for both as you say.

Atalanta...their budget, up against albeit not prime era Juventus, Milan clubs, Rome clubs, Napoli and possibly even Fiorentina year in year out- Gasperini has done very very well there and for a time they were one of the most exciting sides in Europe!

I watch a bit of Serie A. Often been like that under Gasperini. I remember them in the CL a few years ago, they had an inauspicious first 4 games then..had a look.

Dinamo Zagreb (H) 2-0

Shakhtar 3-0 (A A) (Away in Ukraine pre any war, in a qualification decider rather impressive).

Valencia (H) 4-1

Valencia (A) 4-3

Goals at both ends- beat Everton 8-1 across two UEFA Cup Group games in 2017 too. Fun side.

You mean there is a way to play that doesn’t just try to bore the opposition into submission and bore the pants off the team’s supporters in the process? Surely this can’t be the case, because that’s what we had been told was “front foot” football has turned out to be, and that there is only one tactical way in the “modern” game. Who is going to tell Manning?!

Very true- a back 3 with wingbacks at that.

Atalanta seem to be and have been greater than the sum of their parts and it is out of nowhere too..they had an inauspicious start in 2016-17, Gasperini was under a bit of pressure too.

They can be direct, they can play with some possession, or attack minded that is neither possession nor direct.

Net spend is a misleading metric but a quick look at Transfermarkt suggests €154m Profit across 8 seasons. Their rise defies logic really but all credit..a lower midtable Serie A club with their best days long behind them in Summer 2016.
