Guest pogue mahone
The demise of a brutal dictator like Saddam Hussein is to be welcomed, but we should remember that he did not act alone in his oppression and murder of the Iraqi people. Saddam was trained, supported and funded by US imperialism. US presidents, politicians (like Donald Rumsfeld for example) and billionaire US businessmen are the ones who put him in place, maintained him in power and supplied the weaponary he needed to murder his political opponents and destroy the Iraqi people. The Directors of those US, French and British companies which supplied the Saddam regime with this weaponary as well as the chemical weapons he used to gas Kurdish people and the helicopter gunships that were used (with the permission of the US military) to crush the popular uprising in the early '90's - should also be put on trial alongside their stooge Saddam. Just because they recently fell out with him does not mean that they are not still guilty of the crimes that were committed for his and their benefit. We should have no illusions about the media euphoria that will follow this arrest. It is a deliberate distraction from the oil grab; the destruction of a weak and militarily powerless country by an imperialist bully; the fact that 20 to 30 attacks are taking place against US soldiers every day in Iraq, and that the whole "campaign" in Iraq is turning into a quaqmire for US imperialism. Many of the people of Iraq hate Saddam Hussein but thay also hate the occupying US forces. This arrest will not stop the dozens of attacks every day on US forces by the Iraqi people. Nor will this arrest stop US imperialism from arming and funding other brutal dictators who they put in power specifically to destroy democratic movements and make these countries easier to plunder by US companies. Personally, I don't feel any safer because an evil old man hiding in a rabbit hole is now in a different kind of captivity. What would have made a difference would have been the capture of bin Laden, since he is a symbol to fundamentalist Islam everywhere. Saddam really had few allies in the Middle East. I am sure people in Iran are celebrating his capture. However, terrorism is going to continue worldwide.
Spud55
Good to see he was caught. I must say i fell much safer now, knowing that Saddam couldn't irritate me to death, which is about all he could have done. As he couldn't have attacked any of us. O_Faz
It took a tip off from someone close to him to catch him though! Surely the US Forces would have thought to look in his home town for him, first b!oody place I'd look! Well at least he's been caught now, and a lot of people can breathe easy safe in the knowledge he isn't planning a lethal attack.
