Wrexham Have Had Their Electric Cut Off......

What's the deal with Wrexham? Weren't they taken over recently?

Has the new chairman just decided to asset strip them?

It'd be a very long story if I wrote it out in full, but the gist is as follows:

The chairman who took over a couple of years ago worked for the current chairman, and failed to control the debts.

The current chairman then ousted him because it was his money being used. He has said from the start that he is doing this purely as a buisness exercise and that he intends to make a profit.

Now it starts getting really dodgy...

The club had secured a long term lease on the ground which was owned by the local brewery. The current chairman (Alex Hamilton) arranged for the club to buy the ground from the brewery. He then sold the ground from the club to another of his companies for much less than its value, meaning that he now owned the ground, and the club.

Hamilton (a property developer by trade) began insisting that the club had to move to survive, and produced several fairly flimsy looking documents that detailed in great depth the demolition of the current ground, but got a bit hazy when it came to building the new one. He also sold off the training ground.

Fans began mounting large scale protests against Hamilton, at the ground and outside his house. Because of these, Hamilton is now refusing to put any more money into the club, which currently has debts of between 2 and 5 million pounds, including an £800k debt to the Inland Revenue, who have lodged a petition to have the club wound up.

Hamilton doesn't care if the club lives or dies because he owns the ground, and has given the club a year's notice to leave. He clearly has only one intention.

Wrexham council has offered to try and buy the ground, but Hamilton is still currently in a strong position, and is demanding £3m now, or £5m in the Summer (by which time the situation will be desperate).

Please help Wrexham by writing to Wrexham council pledging your support, or by donating to Wrexham Supporters Trust (http://www.wst.org.uk/wst/index.php)

Hi Guys,

I just heard about this thread from a friend of mine (see BCFC_Dan above ) and don't hold it against him that he knows a wrexham supporter :me?: Just thought I would pop by to say hello, fill in a few details and say it means a lot to us to know other fans know and care whats happening to our club...

Short answer to this one is yes, and he is sadly in the home stretch.

As Dan says we have been royally raped by this "property developer" over the past 3 years, just thought I would fill in a few facts and figures:

When new chairman number 1 (a Mark Gutterman previously famous for taking Chester City into administration) took over the club in 2001 Wrexham AFC was approx. £800K in debt, at the end of the 02/03 season we were reporttedly 2.5million in debt, and in those two years Wrexham gained promotion once. Following some digging around by fans and several protests about him, Mark Gutterman stepped down as chairman only to reveal that he had never been in charge of the club, enter chairman number 2.

Alex Hamilton, as Dan says, announced his intentions of "making a profit from the club" right from the start and proceded to buy the ground (which wrexham were paying an annual rent of £1 for) in the clubs name using the clubs money for £300K, which he immediately transfered into his own name for the princely sum of £1. He then put the rent up to 30K per/year and issued us with notice to leave the ground on 21st July 2005.

Since Alex hamilton has come forward as the true chairman, Wrexhams debts have been reportted at anywhere between 2.5mill up to 5mill and in lue of his "contributions" to pay this debt Hamilton transfered the training ground and another plot of land that the club owned into his own name for £0.

Ongoing at the moment fans and Wrexham council (who have been brilliant) are desperately trying to secure the land back from hamilton, and keep the club afloat (which is being wound up by the inland revenue on 17th of this month). From Hamiltons point of view he is sitting pretty, if the club dies, or come July next year when we are kicked from the ground he has a prime bit of retail ground valued at between 10 and 17million pounds.

Yes we are being royally screwed. Thanks in advance for any support you can give, just knowing other clubs are aware of the situation helps.

Cheers DaveOMac

p.s. Leroy Lita is a God ;)

Thanks Dave and Dan for giving me the details. I knew something bad was happening with the chairman but didn't really realise the scale.

What in my eyes is worse is the fact that while clubs such as Man U get huge press coverage when the possibilty of something like this happening other clubs such as Wrexham get nothing.

Cases like this need to be covered in depth and we need to know about it.

I hope the council and the fans sort this out.

They also have a thing called txtaid on their site. I have never heard of it, but basically you sign up and in return you get text messages. You don't pay for recieving them, but the organisation gets money from the sponsors (10p/text). It seems a lot of football clubs are signed up to this.

Good luck Wrexham, something tells me you are going to need it. Perhaps some emails to Sky, BBC, ITV to try and get you mentioned on their respective football shows would be a start.

Wrexham chairman quits amid crisis

Alex Hamilton may re-consider his resignation

Wrexham Football Club chairman Alex Hamilton has resigned during a meeting of the directors, it has emerged.

It followed a disagreement with two other club directors.

Earlier, Mr Hamilton was believed to be reconsidering his position and it was reported he may withdraw his resignation.

But directors Dave Bennett and Dave Griffiths say they have accepted the resignation and plan to form a new board on Monday.

Mr Hamilton was unavailable for comment on Friday evening.

The directors are to hold a meeting with Wrexham Supporters' Trust, which is putting together a takeover proposal for the club, following the appointment of the new board.

Mr Bennett said they were also looking to have a meeting with the Inland Revenue as soon as possible to discuss the club's financial position.

The club has had its bank account frozen and an insolvency specialist has been called in.

We need people there - if they want this club to survive they've got to show up

Denis Smith, Wrexham manager

A spokesman for the crisis-hit League One club confirmed that the players will be paid late as a result of the bank account being frozen.

The squad are aware of the financial problems but Saturday's game at the Racecourse with Hull City is still on.

The new problems come a day after power was cut off for several hours at the ground for non-payment of bills.

Wrexham manager Denis Smith said his players knew they would not be paid on Friday but were expecting to be paid after Saturday's game.

He said the team were concentrating on their football and not the problems at the club.

"We just have to get on with it," he said.

Smith urged fans to put their money where their mouth was and turn up for the home game against Hull.

"We need people there - if they want this club to survive they've got to show up," he added.

Wrexham skipper Darren Ferguson has appealed for a big turnout

"I don't care if they're Premiership fans - have a day off from Man United, Liverpool or whoever, they don't need the money like we do.

"Come along for the next couple of games, or at least tomorrow."

Captain Darren Ferguson added: "I'd just encourage as many fans to turn up as possible. I think Hull will bring quite a few which is helpful - it's a big game."

The club spokesman said there was money in the bank and they were working with HSBC to try to resolve the situation.

On Thursday, Scottish Power-Manweb said it had taken the last resort of turning the power off at the Racecourse after "failing to resolve issues" with the League One club.

Fans

The power was restored a few hours later.

Debts at the Racecourse are believed to be up to £5m, including a tax bill of £800,000.

The Inland Revenue has already lodged a petition to wind up the club, which is due to be heard in the High Court next month.

Alex Hamilton has previously said it may be "impossible for the club to avoid administration and or liquidation in the short term."

He said he had already committed £632,500 of his own money to the running of Wrexham by way of an interest-free loan.

The controversial owner says his family have now persuaded him not to pay a further £200,000 to help pay the Inland Revenue debt.

Wrexham Council has said it wants to buy the Racecourse Ground to safeguard its location on Mold Road in the town.
