Q&a With Paul Sturrock

Q & A with Paul Sturrock, taken from 606.

I went last night and here are few key points he raised:

- Aljofree is desperate to join, but plymouth are holding it up as they want some of the Hobson cash.

- He would like a "couple more" from plymouth, and will arrange for a boat in plymouth harbour to bring them in if need be!

- If he had a big enough squad he would have told 10 players they were surplus to requirements.

- The board are still trying to sort out the hobson cash and if there are "any strings" attached to it.

- Proudlock will be fined a weeks wages if he puts on more than 3 pounds whilst injured.

- He was ill on saturday, which is why he wasn't on the bench to see brentford's 2 goals.

- He would like to play Hamshaw more but McGovern "puts a shift in", and wishes there were 11 more like him.

- Hamshaw and Evans have lost pace since being injured, and evans has been told he is surplus to requirements.

- We conceed too many set pieces and Guy Branston and Lee Bullen have to be responsible for that.

- We are paying far too much to average players. A player who has been on the bench this season (Armstrong?) doesn't get on because on top of his large basic wage he gets an obscene appearance fee, that Sturrock will simply not allow him to be paid. This is also why he is finding it difficult to move players on, as no one else will match the wages we pay.

- He thinks Brunt, collins, whelan etc. are playing too many games and would like an older squad, with them playing less.

- There is no one in the academy who is good enough to have played instead of Joey O'brien.

- Lucas needs to improve his kicking.

- He rates paul smith at left back as he can head, but is too slow for the wing.

- Wednesday have never lost to doncaster, and he has never lost 3 games in row, but until saturday he had never lost to 10 men either!

- He is concerned about the midfield, particularly on sunday, as there is no leader in there.

All in all he came across as objective, honest and knows exactly what he wants from his team. Sadly, it seems this set of players don't match that and we're in for another clearout in the close season. Until then, he will do his best to get promotion.

He also seemed to suggest that if there was a good chance of promotion then dave allen may make some funds available to buy a player or 2
