City Youths Tonight

Crowd of about 200 at Brisbane Rd(currently 2 sided, witha large new stand 3/4 completed, luxury flats going up on one corner).

City(all white kit) concede a soft pen in the 1st minute 1-0 down. 20 mins in Jlamb brings down Orient striker clean through. Red card and 2-0 from resultin free kick. 10 men have a good period and get a pen just before H-T.Cotterill pen saved but retaken due to goalie moving and 2-1 HT.

Orient dominate 2nd half hit post and go close few times. Have about 5 corners in a row before makin it 3-1 with about 10 mins left, but City have a couple of half chances prior to this.

In summary City played good football. Orient had 3/4 first team players out 2nite and looked stronger. Benyon and Cotterill looked good up front.Thought Lamb looked good til red card, Golbourne looked ok. They never gave up and credit to them for the general effort.

Nice to see a game where players not constantly moaning at officials too. Bloody freezin though.

Can someboby please remind me why our acadamy is so damn important

Because if it hadn't been for homegrown players we'd have been lumbered with yet more journeymen such as those who've already proved incapable of taking us to a better level.

Whilst I'm broadly in favour of having an FA academy, the homegrown players have also been part of the failure to escape this division and it would be nice to hear of an occasional win for an academy team.

Are we missing out on the brightest prospects?

Can we attract coaching staff of the required quality?

The young players picked up from the Prem exit trials (Lita & Fortune) are the youngsters having the biggest impact this season.

I was also there to see our demise and agree in essence with your summary.

Comparing your comments with the main site report. We were outplayed in the second half. Cotterill's offside goal could/should have resulted in a yellow card as it was so far after the whistle. The ref was absolutely right with the yellow card for their keeper. Benyon was going away from goal and the ball was probably off the pitch by the time the ref blew.

Most worrying is the fact that out Premier Academy players should be outplayed by a side from a League 2 youth set up. Especially when you consider that Orient have to compete with Arsenal, Spurs, Charlton and West Ham who run Academies within 10 miles.

In the last three years we have been knocked out by Cambridge and Orient (non Academy sides) and by Stoke (whose manager publically trashed Academies when at Portsmouth) When will the Club achieve somthing at Youth level that will indicate the benefits of the Academy system?
