FOOTBALL: STRACHAN SWOOPS Jun 2 2005

Celts boss moves for Niemi, Riordan and Miller could join them

GORDON STRACHAN'S Celtic revolution sparked into life last night when he made a move for Antti Niemi and Derek Riordan.

And Record Sport also understands Lee Miller is another possible target for the

new Parkhead boss. Although the Bristol City striker could be in line for a shock move to Glasgow, Strachan is determined to move quickly for Southampton keeper Niemi and Hibs starlet Riordan - and they could be snapped up within the next few days.

Celtic have this week spoken to the Edinburgh club about the Young Player of the Year and an offer of £750,000 would be enough to take him from Easter Road.

Hibs boss Mowbray said: 'There has been interest in Derek, as you would expect for a young boy who has scored great goals over two seasons. He's proved he's no one-season wonder' We have had snippets of interest from a couple of clubs.

'They've tried to sound us out and we've talked some sort of figures but they have been dismissed out of hand.'

Sources insist a fee of around £3million would be enough to persuade Saints to part with Niemi.

Last night the former Rangers star's agent, Richard Cody, said: 'There is an interest from Celtic and if the opportunity arose for Antti to move there,he would certainly be keen to talk to Strachan.

'It's not widely known but he was almost a Coventry player under Strachan before he opted to join Rangers and they have the utmost respect for each other.

'As well as the Celtic interest, there are a couple of Premiership clubs keen on him but he will definitely move from Southampton this summer.'

It is clear Strachan does not share Martin O'Neill's tendency to leave transfer dealings until the last minute.

The Scot and the Irishman spoke frequently recently about players they thought could help Celtic's ageing side.

And Record Sport can reveal Miller, wanted by a number of clubs, was another player on O'Neill's wish-list.

Much depends on whether Craig Bellamy remains at Parkhead but despite the new manager's optimism, insiders hold out little hope of the Welshman signing a permanent deal.

Reports which suggested the Bristol City man was Rangers-bound were well wide off the mark as the 22-year-old has a far better chance of winning a dream move to Glasgow's east end

Please say Celtic and Rangers get into a bidding war and with Miller due to make his first Scotland cap on saturday then city should add even more money on top of the deal, WIN-WIN situation.

what i don't understand is this, has he returned to us yet like he was meant to after last Hearts game? or will he return to us after scotland game or what??

I think its just a metaphorical "returned" now, as in we now pay his wages again. Other than that, he'll probably just return with the other dirty rotten scoundrils with their deep tans and beer belly's in 3 weeks time for preseason training... unless he's sold.

I'd wanna know one thing, if he is on fire, and he is doing as well as he is, would it not be worth giving him another go in the first team here till the end of the transfer window (end of sept or aug is it?)?

If he doesn't shine then flog him but surely we invested in a young player for the future as much as the present...? You don't buy 'em young and expect miracles surely?
