The New Goalkeeper Is

..... a problem position to fill for several reasons:

For example if

a) We try to sign a keeper from a Premier team youth/reserve level on a season long loan

unlikely because a premier team will want to loan out a keeper to get

experience (in the first team) and also we don't have a specialist goalkeeper coach to help such a player develop their game (of course all Premier teams have this coaching so a loan to us offers no benefit to the loaning club or player )

b) We sign a young keeper who has been released by a Premier/Championship

club

Will such a keeper want to to join us to play reserve football and again without

the goalkeeping coach we cannot offer the development

c) We sign a young keeper released on a free by a League 1/2 club

Unlikely to be of the standard we need ie - capable of coming straight into the

first team for at least half a season if for example Phillips breaks his leg in the

first month of the season, as we would have to wait for the January window to

sign anyone else

d) We sign an experienced League 1 keeper

We are not paying fees, maybe some Bosmans around but will they want to

play reserve football

e) We sign an experienced keeper coming to the end of his career (a la Stowell

when he joined) who maybe will accept reserve football in return for decent wages

In that case why release Stowell and Gould and replace with the same type, I

understand the club's thinking was to release those 2 players due to their

wages and replace with a younger, (cheaper) keeper who would provide a real

challenge to Phillips.

I guess therefore it's likely to be a) or b) as our first choice but I think it will be difficult - lots of names being posted but no strong link to anyone yet.

The only thing you can say is that every other team in our league has the same problem as most have in the past depended on the loan system to cover long term injuies to specialist players,

now we all have to be like Chelsea and have 2 players for every position

What about Russell Howarth? Released by Tranmere, and a former England U21 keeper. Don't know if he's found a club already.
