annanimo
I have to say, I'm very shocked. I quite liked watching Countdown and there was something very amusing about Richard, in an odd sort of way. It will be strange him not being there. swampy
Just read a biography of John Peel. He was becoming increasingly fed up with all of these minute's silences at football matches. He went on record as saying when he passed on he wanted a minute's noise - preferably backed up with the Undertones or the Fall being played. That's the style! swampy
John Peel resisted the ide of these one minute silences - he was always in favour of one minute's noise. A legend!

bcfcchris2016
very sad news. I used to watch countdown a lot because there was nothing interesting on any other channels and still nothing interesting on any channels at 4pm on weekdays. Countdown will not be the same without Whiteley. R.I.P

Claverham_Red
Don't know whether to be surprised, as I knew he has been seriously ill for a number of weeks now. But always thought that he would pull through. Countdown wouldn't be the same with anybody else, surely? Although Channel 4 may want to keep it, as it has been on there since the first ever day that they broadcast. RIP to a presenting legend.
