Another Supporters Trust Saves Their Club

Saw this and felt I should post it.

Stockport countys future has been secured today after their supporters trust purchased the club. The future of the club is no longer uncertain.

This is why we need a supporters trust.

Stockport Supporters trust bought their club, after the owner decided he wanted to sell up. The fans were able to buy Brian Kennedy out, so that the club was not sold off.

Please sign up to the supporters trust so that we are never put in this sort of situation.

Next meeting 12th July 7:30 at Ship and Castle.

Without meaning to drag down trusts at all...

It's a bit misleading to read into the article that the Trust saved the club. Ending "uncertainty" just means they know who owns it now. For all we know the other interested parties may have been in a position to do more with the club. Being "sold off" isn't necessarily a bad thing, the Glazer saga just clouds the waters. It all depends on who the other buyers lined up were and what their intentions were.

The proof of the pudding will be in how solvent Stockport stay and how successful they are.

The problem with ownership exclusively by the fans is that the fans already provide a huge part of a club's turnover, which makes investing more difficult as their hands are already deep in their pockets.

You might be interested in a bit of background reading on page 8 and 9 here.

As with Rushden & Diamonds, the Supporters Trust were chosen as the most appropriate exit strategy by the previous owner.

Concerning how solvent Stockport stay, by way of giving you a flavour of what can be achieved, you might be interested to know that Brentford are run by their Supporters Trust and have just delivered the first profitable season in the Club's history (in addition to R5 FA Cup and play-offs). It can be done.

Without the fans, the football clubs wouldn't have a turnover. A fan owned club can still speculate to accumulate if it wishes (see Real Madrid's £200M debt until recently) but most would chose not to gamble the future of the club. As a club that has underachieved massively post-war relative to its catchment area and potential, we should not fear a world where football clubs operate within their means. After all, the consecutive years of investing that have seen us acquire a £6.6M debt have not exactly brought success either.
