He started out with Sunderland, was though a promising young striker, Leeds bought him for £5 million and he scored 21 goals in his first season with them (99/00 I think). He then got some bad luck with injuries and was out for around 3 seasons pretty much non-stop. On one occasion he was back in training after a long time out (we're talking a year or something) only for him to do something to the other leg and put himself out for another six months.

Leeds let him go to Bolton but he never settled and he rejoined Sunderland last season.

He was a very promising young striker for Sunderland who burst on the scene in 98-99 and scored 16 goals in his first season. In 99 he was transferred to Leeds for 5 MILLION POUNDS (back when Leeds were chucking money around like confetti). He scored 20 goals in 40 games for them, but then suffered the first of a series of injuries. He was subsequently loaned out to Newcastle , went on a free to Bolton, ending up back at Sunderland in December 2004. He was released in May this year.

Five years ago he was being talked about in the same breath as Michael Owen as one of a crop of talented, exciting young English strikers. He is 6'1" and looks like Martin Fowler from EastEnders.

That's all I know.

Michael Bridges

Player Profile

Michael Bridges signed for Leeds United in a £5million deal from Sunderland at the beginning of 1999/00, after growing frustrated with his inability to break into the first team ahead of Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips. He quickly established himself as a fans' favourite with a hat trick in only his second appearance in a Leeds shirt.

The young striker - a native of the North East - was determined to join Leeds United because of David O'Leary's youth policy, ironically turning down a move to link up with former Leeds boss, George Graham, at Tottenham Hotspur.

He was soon turning in some impressive performances, and proved a vital addition to the squad with his ability to hold the ball up and deceptive turn of pace. Bridges went on to score over 20 goals in his first season at Elland Road and was a key player for Leeds in their European campaign. His reward was to become a regular in the England under-21 squad, and started the opening match of the European Championships against Slovakia.

Injury robbed Bridges of taking part in Leeds' historic Champions League run in 2000/01, and he was once again out of most of 2001/02, but make his comeback in Gary Kelly's testimonial in May 2002.

Bridges played in 9 games at the start of the 2002/03 season but injury has once again forced him to sit on the sidelines. He managed a few more appearances in 2003/04, and in January 2004 he joined Newcastle United on loan for three months.

After that loan ended he returned to Elland Road, but only briefly, as he signed for Bolton Wanderers in June 2004, where he will hope to have better fortune in his search for regular football.
