There are some stats that paint an even better picture.

Taking our last 5 losing games and look at 3 simple criteria.

Shots on Target

Shots off Target

% Possession of the ball

Barnet: We had 6 on target compared to their 5, We had 5 off target compared to 3. They had 54% poss we had 46%. City lost 3-2

Oldham We had 9 on target they had 6. We had 8 off target compared to 4. They had 55% poss we had 45% City lost 4-3

Chesterfield We had 1 on target they had 5. We had 2 off target they had 5. They had 58% poss we had 42%. City lost 3-0

Southend We had 9 on target they had 4. We had 7 off target they had 1. We had 57% poss they had 43% City lost 3-0

Notts Co We had 6 on target they had 5. We had 7 off target they had 4. We had 54% poss they had 46%. City lost 2-0

Other than the Chesterfield game where we couldn't have won with only 1 shot on target we have created enough opportunities to win all the other matches.

In the other games we have created more opportunities than the opposition even on smaller amounts of possession. This means that as team we still able to deny our opponents fewer scoring opportunities than they allow us.

The result against Southend is the most telling. They only had 4 shots on target and scored 3 goals! We had 9 on target and failed convert a single one.

Of couse this stats make no allowance for the quality of shot, its power or whether an on target shot was a genuine goal scoring chance (it wasn't a scuffed shot 4 yards out that simply rolled into the goalkeepers gloves)

What it does tell us that the players making these shots need much more practice to put them away! The other thing is should tell everyone is that City are perhaps doing plenty right in terms of creating the opportunities - its just mental toughness thats needed to actually make the shots count.
