Southport Red
Danny Wilson employed a Sports Psychologist when he was at Ashton Gate, believing that a significant amount of a players performance was decided by what happened between his ears. On a cost cutting exercise the psychologist was dismissed (many on here said good riddance, clap-trap, psycho mumbo-jumbo etc). SINCE THAT MOMENT our performances have declines, as has our league position. We now have a team that is the proverbial deer caught in the headlights, and no confidence whatsoever.SO glad we saved that £40K year or whatever it was by not 'wasting' it on that psychologist who had our team believing they could not be beaten (remember the last minutes at Grimsby/Port Vale anyone?)Sports Psychologists are a waste of time and money...discuss

Someone needs to install confidence into the players. They are disraught at the moment and the youngsters are going to be more affected than the experienced bods because they are not used to losing. The trouble is its all down to money and I doubt Steve L will give Johnson the funds for such a luxury unless anyone out there know of any cheap phycologists out there?? Guest stackpoolred
Interesting comments on the pros and cons of employing a psychologist. The best psychologist for Brighton in that 'best forgot' play off was their Manager, Mark McGee. He listed in the dressing room all the teams they would be playing in the Championship if they won that day which included Leeds Utd, Wolves etc. all ex top flight grounds and clubs. Incentive enough I think!!!! and the Manager who we didn't think was good enough for us!!! It will cost us a lot more than £40,000 if we get relegated. Perhaps Gary Johnson should list the 2nd Division Clubs who we will be visiting in 2005-6 as an incentive to stay up with the possibility of playing in front of 2,000 or less gates and Durdham Downs type pitches and cold showers??? together with reduced pay packets.Stackpool Red
