FOOTBALL boss Bob Murray was attacked with a beer glass by one of his own fans, it was revealed yesterday.

The Sunderland chairman was hit in the face and his wife Sue was also injured by the crazed thug.

Mr Murray, 59, was targeted as he enjoyed a curry in Newcastle with his manager Mick McCarthy and their wives. A witness told how the yob hurled abuse at the millionaire for TWO HOURS over the team's poor performances.

As Mr Murray, got up to leave Vujon restaurant on Newcastle's Quayside the man threw a beer glass at him. A fragment hit Mrs Murray, leaving her with a cut near her eye. Mr Murray also had a gash to his face.

The witness said: There was blood all over the place.

Police are probing the incident. Mr Murray recently pumped £10million into the club & still at the bottom of the Premiership.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an attack on the chairman of Sunderland football club, Bob Murray in an Indian restaurant.

Mr Murray was attacked with a glass while out for a meal with his wife and club manager Mick McCarthy and his wife in Newcastle's Vujon restaurant.

He suffered a facial injury from a beer glass in the attack on Friday night and his wife suffered an eye injury.

Police said a man had been arrested and bailed pending further inquiries.

It is thought former Republic of Ireland manager Mr McCarthy intervened to try and stop the attack.

Mr Murray is the longest serving chairman in the club's history.

The 60-year-old has been a Sunderland supporter since the age of nine when his father took him to see his first game.

That's dreadful. I'm as big a football fan as the rest, but the attack on the Chairman is just too much. In the end it's a game, it is recreation, not warfare. Sometimes fans of all clubs need to put things into perspective and realise that even though their club (yes, even :city: ) might be having a tough time there are more important things in life.

God help us.
