Brentford Review

City once again put on the Late Show to finally overcome a physical Brentford (and a flag-happy linesman) and secure their eighth league victory on the spin.

They had the perfect start after three minutes when Aaron Brown sent over a perfect left wing cross for Lee Miller to plant firmly into the net, and for much of the first half City dominated and created a series of clear cut chances, all equally wasted. Marc Goodfellow was sent clear but instead of rounding the keeper lobbed tamely wide, then Luke Wilkshire sent a low shot skidding inches wide with keeper Alan Julien well beaten. Julien had a sound game in all, catching well and anticipating Wilkshire's chip after the Australian had taken the ball wide of his grasp.

Brentford resorted to an ariel challenge on City's defence with Trinidadian Tony Rougier giving Craig Woodman a torrid time on the right wing, and giant centre half Sonko dealing with City's high long balls towards Peacock and Miller. The only chance Brentford really had to score was when O'Connor ran through following Coles' slip but he passed when better placed to shoot.

In the second half Brentford came out in determined mood and their spoiling tactics broke up City's passing game. City's attacks were mostly finished by a flag-happy linesman who seemed to give decisions that were marginal to say the least. Miller gave way for Lita and Goodfellow for Roberts but it was Brentford who equalised 13 minutes from the end, a quickly taken free-kick catching City asleep and Eddie Hutchinson headed into the net.

With time running out Clayton Fortune came on for Tinman and his arial proess immediately paid dividends. From a corner on 88 minutes the ball was headed goalwards three times, the ball being cleared desperately on each occasion, but it was finally crashed in at the far post by Matty Hill. With Brentford's resistance broken City scored a sucker punch counter attack goal two minutes into injury time, Roberts sending Lita clear, amazingly NOT given offside!! and the Congolese coolly slotted into the bottom corner for a 3-1 score.

Ratings:

Phillips: 7 - flapped once but used the punch tactic to good effect otherwise.

Carey: 7 - iffy start but got to grips with the game and made some good tackles.

Coles: 7 - had to cope with a difficult arial opponent and came out on top

Hill: 7 - the goal he deserved for some good defensive covering of Woodman. Booked for a late tackle on Rougier.

Woodman: 5 - given a nightmare by Rougier and was outmuscled.

Goodfellow: 5 - quiet, anonymous in long periods, missed a sitter. Subbed by Roberts.

Wilkshire: 6 - average game, passed well without being spectacular.

Tinnion: 6 - reasonable game but some of his passing was astray. Subbed by Fortune.

Brown: 7 - a good game and set up the first goal. his running and crossing was what the crowd loves to see.

Miller: 6 - scored a good goal, but still needs to work on his ball control. Subbed by Lita.

Peacock: 7 - led the line well, holding up and linking well with the supporting midfield.

subs:

Roberts: 6 - ran well and set up the third.

Lita: 7 - energetic, caused problems for Sonko, scored a beautiful third.

Fortune: on only for 5 minutes so no rating, but he did cancel out Brentford's artillery barrage at once.

i would give fortune 7 i know he only played 7 minutes but he effectively changed the game solid in the air, made a great pass, set up matt hill's goal.

and i would also give miller a 7 as he played much better than agaist colchester last week. he got stuck in much more than he usually does and he also scored!

also you have to give brentford some credit they did play well for a side that has only won one match in twelve matches.

can anybody tell me why a few supporters thought their goal was steve phillips fault? that was a poor goal to concede with slack marking
