Being chartered accountants themselves, they initially targetted a sector they knew but their ads in the Daily Telegraph offering help through the "maze" of 100 unit trusts (there are now over 1500) really grew the business. In the year to June 2004 it made £6.7m profit on £40m sales. But adding around £4m of the director's pay to the profit takes it to £10m, valuing the company at £100m and making Lansdown's 43% stake worth £43m.
