Bristol Clubs 70s And 80s

Following on from the post below about current Bristol Clubs , any older forum members have any memories of the clubs and decent pubs from the early 70s to mid 80s.

I have fond memories of Scamps (mainly disco music) which was next to the Hofbrauhauss (now the Bierlkeller) - a stag and hen night place.

There was also Tiffany's (now the Glen Hospital) which had a Thursday night rule of girls get in free.

Martell's (now a Casino in Anchor Road) was decent.

The Lightship was a boat at the end of King Street which had a great disco nights but disappeared (or sunk) by the mid eighties.

Yesterday's in King Street - bog standard disco but good for a laugh.

I didn't go to the Granary that often - bit too heavy metal for my liking. The Dug-out was legendary.

There was a cluster of places up Park Street/Triangle such as Curves, Maxims, Sinatra's, Vadims, Vicki's (strip-joint) and a place just off college green (can't remeber the name) which became the College Tavern later.

The Hawthornes was a grab-a-granny type place. Other places I went to now and again were Raquel's which was above The Locarno which had decent bands as well as disco, I remember seeing Cockney Rebel there in their prime.

Who can forget Bailey's also known as R&Js but known as The Top Rank even before my time.

Out of town there was Reeves by the HTV studios, The Towns Talk, Chasers in Kingswood (Still going?).

Favourite pubs in town used to be The Crown in the market - cellar bar used to have decent jazz/folk, The Bristol Bridge Inn, The Malt and Hops in Broad Street, the Bunch of Grapes in King St and The Clipper (now El Puerto Tapas Bar).

Favoutite club of City players of the late 70s was Platform 1 - I never managed to get in - door policy seemed to be you had to be a footballer, friend of a footballer or a female.

There were obviously more that have faded in the mists of time (anyone remember Mozarts in Stokes Croft)

And a few favourite eateries from back in the day - the Bombay in Denmark St (beware of flying vindaloos on a Saturday night), The Greek Taverna in the Horsefair (buy 10 plates for £1 and smash them on the floor for fun) , The Famagusta in Stokes Croft and the Sheesh Mahal in Gloucester Road (still going).

Does this jog any memories with people of a certain age, ie you would probably remember City in the top-flight?

R & J's was the place for me. Full of top totty. I rarely failed to get laid after a night out there. What more could a young lad want.

Locarno was the place to see a band. Always something on a Sunday night. Just along from the Locarno was one of my favourite pubs "The King Dick". Anyone remember this place? And when talking about old night clubs, who can forget the infamous "Dugout". Happy days. :)

Platform One - wasn't that the location of the Ray Cashley incident?

Chasers in Kingswood, handy as I could walk home having had a few beers and a kebab! Remember one night having a smooch with a woman, went to kiss her and she pushed the top set of her false teeth into my mouth. End of romance :crying:

Club near the Odeon cinema, kept changing its name.

Kev,

What do you mean, a few beers and a kabab? Tradition stated that the burger van opposite was the eatery to be seen at !! After being thrown down the back stairs by the overzealous bouncers.

Grab a granny was fun, although one very nice lady I met turned out to be a customer of my dad (the local coal man). End of romance :(

Never copped off with schoolgirls though, the bouncers were a bit more discerning about who they let in, and always eager to throw a few out down the stairs. happy days :)

Got food poisoning from the burger van.... or that was my story anyway (nothing to do with the copious amounts of grog consumed from 8 til 2)
