Anyone want to hazard a guess why this thread about threads is known as a thread?

Anyone want to hazard a guess why this thread about threads is known as a thread? If you dangle a 6ft bit of string from the ceiling in a room and give everyone in the room a small peg. If somone has an interesting peg they will attach it to the top of the string for all to see.The string does not move and people are free to read the peg(s) and string and encouraged to add their peg to the string, thus creating a 'thread'. You see the string is the thread and our posts are the pegs.

CiderHider
Half the length multiplied by 2 is that the same as double the length from one side to the middle? It still does not answer the question though, how long is it? No, actually the answer is easy...you simply just measure the string....right?
