Guest Tactical Genius Posted April 15, 2006 Report Share Posted April 15, 2006 Under the old league structure the bottom 2 divisions were the only 2 that had 24 clubs, which is a possible explanation as to why there were extra relegation/promotion places. Although when the league was restructured from the even older 3rd div north & south back in the late 50's, the top 3 divisions were operating a system of 2 up 2 down. Redhyde Posted April 17, 2006 Report Share Posted April 17, 2006 Another reason is that due to the one up from non league, the FA believed that the bottom division could become stale if the same teams stayed in the league. So instead of letting non leaguers in which obviously a bottom half div three club wouldn't vote for they decided to increase the promotion places generally just to give an influx of new blood into the league.
