Gj Beavering Away

I'm becoming impressed by Gary Johnson's transfer activity.

Which is surprising considering the January window was such an anti-climax.

And finally the foreigners we were all expecting (judging by his Yeovil reputation) are beginning to come here, mostly on trial.

Unlike previous bosses, Johnson doesn't seem to swoop for the first convenient signing. He seems to vet the players (by which I mean assessing their attitude) and keeps the purse-strings tied very tight, no doubt to the pleasure of Lansdown and co.

Johnson also favours players in their early and mid twenties, who should be hungry for success and in their physical prime.

All we need now is to see the proof, which will be in the football pudding (mmmm....football pudding... ).

With the captures of Noble, Fontaine, Jevons and Weale the future looks gravy. Hopefuly we'll see that he can bring through young players well also, not-to-mention a knack for off-loading overpaid dead wood  .

The image in my head of Johnson 'beavering away' is repulsive. It sounds like something out of a dodgy 70s porn film. Apparently.

Reminds me of the Cadburys Caramel Advery.

Disturbed mind.

He reminds me of a less mennacing, chubbier version of Ray Winstone.

Oh and when I referred to how he 'vets' players, I didn't mean like the role-play you and your goats indulge in.... :shifty:

I'm sure Jevons is on a tight wage

*cough*

Compared with Stewart he undoubtedly is.

No offence, but when your club is backed up front by 7,500 Season Ticket Holders you'd expect to be able to pay a reasonable wage for this level to attract players.

Still doesn't mean Jevons is on a fortune at City.

I certainly like the idea of try before you buy, I just wasn't a fan of doing it mid season. I hope our non-league scouting improves similarly and we start unearthing gems like the Gas used to with Ellington and Hayles.

Noble and Fontaine are excellent signings. I've not seen enough of Weale and Jevons to judge but it's clear the manager rates them. McCombe looks like a prospect but I thought Heywood was a decent enough first ball winner. Showunmi... well I'd prefer we didn't play the sort of football that requires a 6ft5 forward but I imagine GJ will use him situationally so fair enough.

I think we're still short a left winger, pacy striker and the backup keeper (which the manager seems to have lined up), but I'm certainly pleased he's not just signing whoever was available like Tinman did. Perhaps now with Phillips gone and rumours of Stewart to Plymouth we'll see some more movement. Judging by the offer we put in for Hayter and Reddy we have money available that we haven't spent.

The wage bill, if we can get rid of Smith, Partridge and Stewart is most likely in much healthier shape than it was last season as well.

And don't forget we can throw Wilkshires wages into the pot too, he was rumoured to be one of out top earners.

Yep although I'd guess that the signings we've made so far have eaten most or all of that up. We have lost J Smith also though and he was probably earning senior first team wages.

Perhaps we'll run in the black without including transfer fees the year after this one.

"situationally"??!! A dead give away. Nibor you must be an ex-professional footballer. Either that or you have caught Atkinson's disease!

GJ has impressed me on the transfer front too. The late run last season was great but in the transfer window there seemed little prospect of us making the play-off although I was convinced we'd be safe. No point paying over inflated prices then. Always better to wait for the summer for Bosmans. Also, despite his comments to contrary he really is after a left-sided player as evidenced by the Santos trialist. No point alerting others or demoralising the current squad by saying so just in case a signing doesn't materialise. Common sense and good man management.

I'm an ex terrible amateur footballer, honest.

I was trying to be polite, what I really meant was I expect GJ will play him mainly on the bench so we can bring him on to kick the shit out of people when we need it.
