Johnson Plays Down Norwich Speculation

From the Bristol Evil Post

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson has ruled himself out of the race for the manager's job at Norwich City.

The Robins chief has made clear that he remains totally focussed on the job of getting the Ashton Gate club promoted.

Norwich are interviewing a seven-man shortlist which is thought to include several managers with similar levels of experience to Johnson.

Doncaster's Dave Penney, Burnley's Steve Cotterill and S****horpe's Brian Laws are thought to be under consideration.

West Ham assistant boss Peter Grant, current Canaries caretaker Martin Hunter and Hibernian boss Tony Mowbray are also in the frame.

Mowbray, however, is now the favourite for the West Bromwich Albion job.

Johnson cut his managerial teeth in East Anglia with non-league Newmarket Town as a player boss before switching to nearby Cambridge United.

But he has ruled out any move to replace Nigel Worthington at Carrow Road.

He told the Post: "There is a lot to do at this club and that's my only focus at the moment.

"Bristol City is the only club I am concerned about and I am enjoying the challenge.

"There is always going to be speculation and it is fair enough when a club is doing well but I want to get this club to the next level and beyond.

"I know that (Norwich) area very well but I am only concentrating on this club."

Yeh, I've heard that some of them bear a faint resemblence to Jose Mourinho, who we all know drove through Norwich once.

Jesus :doh::disapointed2se::disapointed2se:

In other words, he wasn't ever considered. He wasn't asked and the club haven't been asked for permission to approach and he's got that in common with about 150 other managers.

A decent ground, loyal support, a decent/ambitious board and a more professional off field set up.

A decent ground = Well 6000 more isnt that much and ground size does not affect how well we compete.

Loyal support = Well support would improve with league position. There has certainly been an increase in City away support currently.

Decent Ambitious board = Well i think are board is just as good as theirs although we work with a lower budget due to where we are. But i think we are just as ambitious as the next club. (althought i wait to be shot down for my opinion of this).

A more professional off field set up = well yes possibly i could agree with you here but the use of AG for other events is more than Norwich use theres. but as said above, it would improve with league position.

But as Ashtonyate says, we can be bigger than Norwich, but we need time to establish ourselfs, but this club has got, and has had huge potential of a long long while

What are these 'off the field' attributes that Norwich have, that we need to emulate?

few years back when they went down (not last season (4/5 years back), they had just finished building, which was quoted as probably the best training grounds outside the premiership. (lets be honest our training ground is a bit of a joke really

not sure if that is true, but regardless they are currently building a Holiday inn hotel into part of the ground with "top class facilities".......bit better than a repainted dolman bar

plus having Delia Smith at the club, you they have tied that into the hospitality part of the club with such things as "Delia's Restaurant" which is open? they also do weddings at the ground apparently?

I think one of the best things to build in to a ground is a Casino! makes money whatever day of the year and can only be of benifit. They should knock down the Wedlocks and build a new stand, which incorporates a Casino.

I believe licensing for casinos is a bit of a bitch. There was recently a set of new licenses granted UK wide, I think they'll be the last for a while.

It's a decent idea though, with the boom in poker at the moment casinos are making record money.

spot on, getting licences for a casino is very difficult these days, besides? what an odd place it would be to stick one right in the middle of Ashton?

besides.....we have just got the booze culture out of the club, lets not encourage gambling!

wouldn't mind a lap dancing club at the ground though? that would be a sure fire way to make money? perhaps they could have a seperate area in the dolman bar area? :w00t:

would take a very long time for us to be a bigger club than norwich, we may get a better league positions than them in a couple of years but off the field we have alot to do to complete with a club such as norwich

Not being funny, but thats not true.

Have you ever been to Norwich?

I lived there for sevaral years and let me tell you they are a couple of years behind the rest of the country in many respects.

They still wear Ski Jackets listen to Nick Kershaw
