Brian Wilson - what do people think?

Right first off, looks as if Wilson could well become the most overshadowed signing ever following the departure of Scott Brown (ok on loan)

Let's put the Brown issue to one side, as it is being more than discussed on the MASSIVE posting, let's concentrate on the future, what do people actually think of the signing of Wilson?

We have been crying out for a left winger all season and Johnson has delivered, (quality of signing can be judged over time) fair enough has can play in defence also but looks to be signed as a winger.

Personally the fact that it an undisclosed fee possibly means that we have got him fairly cheaply probably around the 100k that Chelts agreed with Plymouth, so already cheap-ish deal again which is good,

he is supposed to be a Pacy Player so can at last offer so good pace on the left wing, he got 12 goals last season albeit in League 2, however at least he has a good eye for Goal?

I've don't remember seeing him play personally, has anyone one seen him before and what do you think?

12 days into the window, we have the winger we needed and a 3rd choice keeper, plus he's shipped out players he doesn't see as in his plans for the future, good work in the transfer window so far.

Hopefully can convert some of the doubters

I can tell you fans that he is much more effective down the right hand side, and is heavily right footed. he did ply his trade last season down the left wing but league 2 was a poor league last season. he certainly wont be crossing the ball with his left foot and would slow down attacks by having to cut back in on his right.

it does seem that now we have a balenced midfield with two out and out wingers, a defensive midfielder and a play maker

I'm very pleased and I definatley think we will be seeing many more crosses into the box for jevons/enoch and brooker to get there heads on as they are all excellent headerers of the ball

I think this new found balance could be the difference in our season, as I do feel now we have a complete team

I am very much looking forward too seeing wilson tomorrow and how he links up with macca

ps. I love your signature, since the first 'believe' thing they've been steadily getting better and I think you get the crown!

To be honest I don't know anything about this Wilson guy apart from the stats on t'internet. From that he could well be a good signing, I just hope that people don't slate him before they actually see him play (which seems to happen an awful lot on here).

One good thing though is that at least he chose us over Argyle, maybe Johnson is making players see that AG is the place to come to play your football.....

Or it could just be that he won't have to move from wherever he is living at the mo.

Left winger yeah right! chel10ham post states that he is clearly a right winger and uses his RIGHT more than his left, Scott Murray can play left wing with his right foot! Any decent defender will force Wilson out to use his left foot. I'm NOT having a go at the player, just pointing out he is not a naturally left sided player as needed! But wish him well at the club.

Backward step if you ask me.

How old is he 65?

I mean I saw down the Colston a few years ago. He WILL be able to orchestrate the midfield by clenching both hands and pointing where he wants the ball, but box to box, nah!

His best days are behind him, still you gota SMILE!

I was waiting for someone to say that. When I told GeoffA we'd signed Brian Wilson, he said 'what, he's playing at AG next summer?' :clapping:

Just have a feeling that this could be another Grant Smith situation.

Wilson's a right footed player being played on the left. Seems as though he will not be playing in his better position on the right (ala Smith being a central midfielder)

He seems to have scored a few goals from there last season - just as Smith did the season before he joined us.

Hope this isn't the case and the boy does well for us, only time will tell.

yep, right footed, but as you stated with Murray he could play there, so I believe also has Brown and Wilkshire, but in this league he can probably carry it off, plus if he is quick, a good crosser and with an eye for goal, he could also be signed as a possible long term replacement for Murray maybe?

Well i for one am looking forward to watching him play, and to see where he is played. Its going to be interesting to see how the defenders use him, over the top to run onto, or to his feet to see a turn of pace. If on the left Mcallister wil be a good help for him.

He's played plenty of games on the left wing so it's not like the position will be alien to him, assuming that's where Johnson is going to play him.

He'll be able to link up well with Jamie Mac, and it's encouraging that he is described as good at going forward but also must be proficient in defending as he's played at the back a fair bit.

Him and Jamie Mac can overlap. The crossing from the left foot can be Mac's job, while Wilson can concentrate more on cutting inside and getting shots on goal.

I believe it can and will work.

And lets not forget Murray isn't 'that' bad on the left. To have two out and out wingers for the first time in 2-3 years will be great. It's easy to mark one out of the game, but not so with two - so either Murray will benefit, or vice versa.

I think Jamie Mac will appreciate having someone in front of him who will help defend for a change,by playing strikers out on the left he has been left to over exposed at times.

Good News , ok HE may be a liitle past it - But Hey look at his track record PET SOUNDS / SMiLE / SMILEY SMILE /SURF'S UP/ HOLLAND and even his 1st Solo Album from 1988 was rather special.

Soon GJ might sign up Mike Love . Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston It just might bring a little harmony to our club :-)

all good points, apart from the fact they are completely different human beings. With completely different DNA, and who have probably never met.

good, available, left footed left wingers who would move to Bristol City just don't really exist, kids... even if he does favour his right, he'll do for me!

An out and out left winger who is heavily right footed..

Wooopy!

You say this but for an example look at the top three in the Premiership at the moment, all operate with right-footed players on the left.

Arsenal - play Ljungberg, Helb, Rosicky, Walcott on the left and last season Pires (none are left footed)

Man Utd - Ronaldo has been playing there, stronger on right foot.

Chelsea - Joe Cole (when fit!), plays on left for England also on left wing and right footed.

One of the few out and out left footed wingers in the Premiership is Downing, who let's be honest would not get on the bench of the top 3 Premiership clubs.

You don't need to be an out and out winger or left footed to play there.

From whats been said, he isn't a left winger, which is a problem. Why don't we play him to his strengths on the right wing, and look to get a left winger on loan for the rest of the season?

A youngster from a Premiership club, who is actually left footed, and actually a left midfielder would be good. Nick Wright and Calvin Andrew were like Jennison Williams; strikers out of place on the wing.

Our problem as far as I can see, in terms of the left of midfield, is that people who can play there are not good enough. We need a specialist left midfielder, not a "utility player" playing out there.

I'm not even bothered if he's a box to box player, someone who can pass and defend, with a nippier player on the right would suit me nicely.
