The Football Association is investigating the pitch invasion following the derby clash between Bristol Rovers and Bristol City.It comes after Bristol Rovers officials announced they would ban every supporter they could identify who ran onto the turf at the end of the match on Tuesday night.

More than 200 home supporters and a handful of City fans got onto the pitch after the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Area final, which was won by Rovers 1-0. FA officials will speak to both clubs, however only Rovers are likely to face any sanctions as the second-leg match was played at the Memorial Stadium.

An FA spokesman told the Evening Post: "We are aware of this incident and are in the process of making further inquiries. We will be speaking to both clubs to get their view on what happened and will be writing to them shortly to ask them both to provide a full explanation.

"At this stage, we have not ruled out taking further action."

Rovers have been going through TV footage in a bid to identify fans who were on the pitch. They have warned that anyone who is clearly identified will be banned for life. Those who can be named could also face court proceedings as it is a criminal offence to invade a football pitch.

Colin Sexstone, chief executive of Bristol City FC, said: "It is normal procedure for the FA to investigate an incident of this nature. It's the home club's responsibility, but if a fan is determined to get on the pitch then it's very hard to stop them.

"It's idiotic and unsafe and we do not condone such behaviour in any way, shape or form. We would support any action Rovers or the FA decide to take to stop people getting on the pitch."
