City's Scouting/signing Policy North Of Border

In Scotland there's a league of comparable standard to the CCC, full of players already acclimatised to the speed of the British game (in fact - its even faster and more manic up there), where there isnt a lot of money outside the Old Firm, and where players are keen to further their careers by moving down south. Makes 10 times more sense than buying players from England - where Sky money and hopeless distribution of wealth means out of favour players from teams above us have stupid wage demands, and players from divisions below us have crazily inflated transfer fees (thankyou Charlton!).

Gary Mac, Little Lee, Ivan Sproule, maybe this Poposil guy, and maybe even Steve Naismith (who is an international for a team ranked 14 in the world remember!); all genuine targets for us, and all twice as expensive if they were here already.

Think it's very progressive, very clever strategy and should be commended. We'll still get the odd kid/idiot who says we're not showing ambition for not spending millions on players they've heard of (there's even a post somewhere below that insinuates Sproule isnt a good signing because we're not paying ENOUGH!!!), but I reckon its an excellent policy and had a lot better chance of improving an already good side than paying over the odds for fees and wages for over-rated UK players, and completely unproven and unsuitable foreigners. Like we did last time!!

(lets not mention Lee Miller though!:))

Agree with your post but it's nothing new. City used to have a very good scouting network north of the border that turned up players like Ritchie, Gow, Sweeney, Gillies etc - the cornerstone of our past success.

The problem is that the good scouting network has declined badly over the years. G.J. recognised and addressed the problem by appointing Pete Johnson - one of the unsung hero's in my opinion.

in the past, definitely - but not in recent times, as we've overspent on loads of players who never really performed (Thorpe, Seebok, Peacock, Steve Jones, Bo Andersen, etc etc).

And yeah - Pete Johnson seems be doing a great job. All signings have done well (some more than others, admittedly) and all have improved our squad. I even think Betsy will suprise a few people next year!

The Scouting in general has improved dramtactilly since Pete Johson was brought in, players from coming in Boston and Lincoln were hammered before they had even kicked a ball for the club, turns out Noble and McCombe have been 2 of the best signings we have made for YEARS!

personally would also add Brian Wilson to the list, who improved as the late season went on and think is going to develop into a very good player

Our most successful team in the last 40 years was built around Scottish players. Lets go that way again!

Back in the day most of the successful English teams were populated by Scots [irish and Welsh to an extent]. Theres a feeling up here that this is starting to become a trend again.

I think the reasoning behind looking in Scotland is there is a wealth of underscovered talent which is value for money, Or more so you get more for your money.

The English transfer market is over priced at the moment so it really does make sense to look north of the border.
