Hello All,

firstly please excuse me if I have posted this in the wrong forum, perhaps it should be in the Social forum--I'm not too sure of the protocol yet.

As a schoolboy I left Bristol in 1970 with my family and we emigrated to Oz. The last match I went to at Aston Gate was a night match against Charlton (I think) in about 1968 or 1969. We won 6-1. I think the players that night included John Galley, Skirton and I think Mike Gibson was the 'keeper. It's forty years ago and my memory is not too good. I have never seen City play live again.

It was pretty basic in Australia back then when it came to UK football news, we had 1 hour highlights on TV on Saturday afternoons showing edited matches that were one week old. It took dedication to follow a side back then (I sound like an old git, don' I?)

Anyway, I remember when we were promoted to the 1st Divn (1975?) and how I think the first macth was away to Arsenal--and we won 1-0!!!

Over the years communications have improved and with Foxtel and the internet I can follow the football pretty well now, although it means some very late nights when watching the live matches. Like the rest of you, I have agonised over the past few years when we have been so close to promotion to the Championship but still so far. Now we have made it and the future looks red and rosey.

So cheers to you all and may we always follow The City.

on a side not, the coverage over their was pretty damn good few years back when i was over their, was staying in a hostel in Kings Cross at the time of the Everton League cup game and saw a newspaper which had a pull out section decated to English football and had a bloomin good write up on the game!

plus in fairness you probably get more live English Football on TV over there than we do here! MADNESS!

Tuesday, September 23rd 1969 - City beat Charlton 6-0 in the "old" Division Two - now The Championship! Scorers were John Galley (3) Alan Skirton (2) and Danny Bartley in front of a crowd of 15098 - which included you and I Bristol Sydney.

The previous home match three days earlier was against Norwich which City won 4-0 with again, Galley (2) Skirton and Bartley the scorers.

Almost 40 years later and City are back where you left them. You haven't missed much!

I spent almost a year in Oz (you may recogonise the background in my photo!). Great place to live, but so far away. If it was only a few hours away, I would want to emigrate.

I know all to well the frustrations of trying to follow city from there. The internet is a wonderful thing!

Pete

thank you citylad21, glos boy, bh red and Rudolph.

It's great to hear from home. Life in Sydney is pretty good and I've been here a long time but there are some things you can't replace.

2 or 3 years back I went to the Sydney Casino at around midnight to watch the EPL match on Fox. I think it was Man Utd v Newcastle. At one end of the casino they had a giant full-wall screen. The place was packed with English supporters, it was like being at a real match. There was singing and chanting and general rivalry, all with a beer in your hand and from the comfort of an armchair. The atmosphere was fantastic. There are some things you can't replace.

Hey Rudolph, I was hoping someone could fill in the blanks about that night against Charlton. Not a bad match for me to carry with me all these years. In fact, I think I remember you, weren't you the guy in the red shirt....?

Anyway, it's past 1.00am here and I need to sign off. But I'll be back...

John Galley (3) Alan Skirton (2) and Danny Bartley

Those names were the heroes for me when I was a kid. A few years ago I went to a wedding where John Galley was a fellow guest. Even though I was 40 by then I was still too star struck to speak to him, he was my boyhood hero.

Another thread on here is about the hardest shot, I can remember Skirton hitting one from mid way between half way and the penalty box, against Blackpool I think (could have been Fulham - not exactly the same are they? - let's say it was Blackpool) and the BANG as it hit the post could be heard around the ground, even above the "ooohs" of 15K people. I swear the post shook for over a minute!! Happy days. Welcome to the forum and thanks for reminding me of those great names. SR

Welcome! Id recommend you sign up for BCFC World, you wont miss a thing then, and they have highlights of some matches in recent years. Just had a couple of friends emmigrate over there, they ended up NSW, couple of hours away from you down the coast in a place called Woolagong, one of them is a BCFC fan so your certainly not alone out there.

Massive mistake, me thinks, i had the same sort of problem about 10 yrs ago, had a job to go to in Ireland but decided for the kids not to, with every day that goes by i regret it more and more, this country has turned into a rat-hole whichever way you turn you end up getting ripped off more and more, mostly by the big businesses, OC knows the score, assasinate Brown, burn down all the palaces (and all the Tescos as well) Nationalise all the greedy thieving Banks, hang Davina McCall and all those flippin' idiots in big brother, and flog every nobody, wannabee and nevershouldofbeen who has ever received any sort of honour, confiscate their medals and give them to all our Nurses, soldiers and roadsweepers. I'm just going to open another bottle of Jacobs Creek.

Dear All,

I am overwhelmed, but not surprised, by the depth of emotion and the genuine sense of well wishes that I feel in everyone's responses.

I know it's not supposed to be "all about me", but as the new boy I feel entitled to be somewhat indulgent and to tell you a little more about myself before I bore you all to death..Arny, that might be a case of "saying the wrong thing" but anyway I'm sure someone will quickly tell me if I have gone too far.

I was born in Bedminster and soon moved to Easton Rd whewre we had a Fish and Chips shop. When I was about 5 we moved to Worrall Rd off Blackboy Hill and I went to St John's Primary school at the top of B'Boy Hill.

At that time my Mum and Dad owned the Chicito Restaurant on B'Boy Hill, (which changed to be an Indian Restaurant in around 1984.)

Around 1964 we moved to The Triangle, Clifton at the top of Park St. Mum and Dad had a cafe there called the Zante, next to the Chopsticks chinese restaurant. It started as a restaurant, then became a cafe with pinball machines, a jukebox and Bally machines.(Is everyone snoring now?). 6 years later we were gone to Aust.

In answer to some of your posts:

city pete 1:hello and I think I can just about name the bridge in your photo

JudgeRed: you can see above where I lived.

Southport Red: hardest shot I recall belonged to Peter Lorimer of Leeds

Gaz Red: yep, it's Wollongong, about 90mins south of Sydney

bigtone 59: you were at the Charlton maqtch in '69 which makes you a bit of an old-timer now too I suppose

glos boy and punnet: so close and yet so far. The old saying goes something like" of all the words of mouth or pen, the saddest of these are "it might have been.." Life is too short to dwell on the past.

punnett: keep drinking the wine and taking the tablets; come the revolution Brother.....

Gary the Dogs: Pyrmont in Sydney is a deadly spot; pub on every other corner, some never close, Casino just up the road...hmmm, tell me again why did you leave...??

solar eclipse: very funny. We are in a four year drought in Oz and after just two days of rain in Sydney, we all wished it to hell.

havanatopia: thank you.

Brisbane City: hello and it's very brave of you to write to Sydney after Wed's State of Origin result ( oh alright, I know you won the series).

Bransomo: Caringbah is a nice spot. Are you just visiting? Does your son live there?

Well there you go. Anyone who lasted to the end of all that has just lost 5 minutes of their life which they will never get back. I thank you for letting me prattle on. In future I will try to be brief.

May all your teams be City.
