What Do Some People Expect.

I am amazed at the level of some peoples expectation for this board and the club. Some are already suggesting our chairman and board make way for new investors to take the club onwards.

Well lets clear something up here, in our entire history we have mainly been yoyoing between division 2 and 3 and 30 years ago we have had the briefest of spells in the top flight. This big club never happened, ever.

We are currently in a stable relationship with a chairman and board that have loaned the club money in exchange for shares, as long as they are here the club will be in steady hands, not overly aggressive in the transfer market, yet, not completely tight fisted either.

They have spent money along the way on players to help us get to this position of 2nd tier football, this is possibly the best standard of football most people who have supported City under 40 will ever see at AG. So we have a sensible chairman and a decent standard of football to expect in this division, we aren't big players in this league and are not likely to be unless we can find another 8000 regular fans from somewhere, so why on earth do some on here think by spending money to tip us over the edge is going to help in anyway. Just enjoy the fact the club and team are currently in the best league we can realistically hope for without risking our future.

The recent Lansdown Doctrine is new. When Danny Wilson was Manager Steve Lansdown threw his money around with the best of them and spent big money on fairly useless players. It is only since he has received £3m from Lita and Cottrell and become very rich in his own right that SL has pulled up the drawbridge. Maybe he feels the statement will protect him from over expectations in the transfer market but it does have the wiff of insecurity.

With the euphoria of promotion up to another 8000 fans would have been no problem with more sensible seat pricing and a more sensitive attitude towards the fans that have supported the Club over the last 9 years. 17000 fans at slightly less per fan would have generated far more income than the 9000 achieved by Sexstone at the present high prices.

Finally, Jackie Charlton said that he hoped Bristol City would return to their proper place in the Fottball League, "about half way up the second Division".

Now we have arrived do we press forward or consolidate?

Typical attitude of many fans who are happy to accept what this great club is all about? :disapointed2se:

While I accept that we have got back to CCC level & that we have a steady ship, with a steady captain, we have to believe that this 'big club' can reach a level that we did back in the 70's.

Miserable post's like this show little drive & ambition. It's great to be in the CCC, and it's exciting to look forward to teams coming to Ashton Gate in the likes of WBA, Wolves etc.

But we shouldn't be yoyoing between CCC & CCL1, we want to be yoyoing between Prem & CCC.

Teams like Reading, Fulham,Charlton, Wigan etc, are key examples of where we should set our sites.

History is great to reflect on, but too many fans tend to live in the past & don't seem to get excited about what & where this club could go?

Manderic saw Portsmouth as an opportunity, now I am sure Leicester will move forward with him. Madeski is another key example of vision with controlled costs & we all remember Elm Park??

SL has been at the club for some years & eventually we got in a manager that took us over the first line. We make the CCC & some fans post saying that they would be happy to finish 4th from bottom!! How crazy is that statement. We want to make a good fist of it in our first season.

SL/GJ has moved the club forward, but I for one believe that we need to think positive & not settle for being a yoyo club from CCC to CCL1, but focus on top CCC & set sites on Prem.

If the club tick box's for major investment, then we HAVE to look at the potential & invite this opportunity.

History is just that.

We should always be looking to improve.

We should be realistic though and expecting SL to throw millions at us is unfair, risky and unrealistic.

I am sure he will continue to invest sensibly in both the squad and the facilities, after all we've probably spent the better part of a million already this summer and he's always backed managers.

How do you know that he's always backed Managers other than from his and the luckless Managers sayso?

I mean financially.

He's allowed every manager to spend reasonable money. He gave Wilson everything he asked for... Lee Peacock, Wilkshire, Miller. He let Tinnion sign Brooker, Heffernan, Stewart and Bridges. He has backed Johnson with money.

There is no way that we would have had an extra 8000 fans next season even if SL had kept the prices the same. We haven't averaged that many since we were in the old Div 1. We just don't have that many fans at the moment, unless you count the daytrippers who turn up for cup finals, who come more for the occasion than as fans of the club.

I don't think the original poster was being negative - far from it - just realistic about BCFC's place in the grand scheme of things. Leaving aside 4 years in late 70s, we haven't exactly achieved much - ever. That doesn't mean that will always be the case though, as teams such as Reading and Wigan have shown.

I'll take steady growth thanks.

Big club? Who are you talking about?

Realistic post Richie, how can you believe Lansdown doesnt want the best for this club?

Yes, so do 23 other clubs in this division.

History is great to reflect on, but too many fans tend to live in the past & don't seem to get excited about what & where this club could go?

Who's living in the past, we had a few seasons in the top flight in a hundred or so years, wow, MK DONS have more to shout about than City. Again, whos being realistic here?

Manderic saw Portsmouth as an opportunity, now I am sure Leicester will move forward with him. Madeski is another key example of vision with controlled costs & we all remember Elm Park??

We need to survive thats all, doesn't matter how we do it.

SL/GJ has moved the club forward, but I for one believe that we need to think positive & not settle for being a yoyo club from CCC to CCL1, but focus on top CCC & set sites on Prem.

Who doesn't want that? Realistically though, we're going to have to settle for many seasons of building a squad that can get us there, blowing a fortune now would be suicidal for this club, ask Leeds Utd fans now what they think of the policy of chucking stupid amounts of borrowed cash chasing a dream.

If the club tick box's for major investment, then we HAVE to look at the potential & invite this opportunity.

Haha, yes, ticking the boxes, has that Super Agent apologised to the board for that embarrassment written in the press yet? Or what about the other major investor John Maguire?

Not everyone in this league can go up, so what difference does it make if Lansdown spent £20 million on players, doesn't guarantee anything, it would just mean if we didn't go up the chairman would have dug his own grave and the clubs.
