Matty H Posted March 29, 2004 Report Share Posted March 29, 2004 As usual the Tabloid Press seems to be doing as much as is humanly possible to disrupt our national team as it approaches another major tournament, and as usual The Suns Chief Football Writer, Shaun Custis, is leading from the front. Of course, I am talking about Sven. Ok, so going and meeting Kenyon behind closed doors without admitting he was doing so was silly but the press have lynched him and mark my words, they will not let this one go as we approach Euro 2004. The bottom line is that Sven has signed a new contract for England. That's all that matters! I can't believe that the old 'loyalty' chestnut is being wheeled out again! Custis knows as well as anyone that their is no loyalty in football anymore. Can anyone else honestly say that they would not be exploring all their options and checking they have got the best package to suit them before they sign any new contract? Of course not, and Sven is no different. Loyalty is even less likely to play a part as Sven is not English. Years ago the England Managers Job was seen as the pinnacle of a managers career, but like it or not that is not the case anymore and you wont find a single other manager who would do anything different when faced with making a big, financial, career decision. The only thing they may do different is come out in public and say that they are exploring all their options, which is what Sven should arguably have done, rather than go out of sight and do it. I remember typing something similar about the Tabloids trying to destroy team spirit before the last World Cup and lo and behold, Custis was the man stirring the sh*t back then as well. I know Brian came on here and defended his opinions last time and I would be interested to know your opinion this time Brian if you're out there? Listening to Custis today on 5 Live, it was blatantly obvious that he is not going to let this lye. But why the hell not! Sven has the full backing of the players. He has signed a new contract with England, and he has turned his back on club management again. Surely no one is seriously in any doubt of his commitment to England purely because he has explored his options? He has the best record for an England manager for years, but listening to Custis today you would think he had commited treason! Wouldnt it be nice just for once if in the build up to a major tournament, the press got behind our boys and the manager and gave them support and encouragment instead of vilifying them at every opportunity? You almost get the feeling that they want England to fail. I cant think of one manager who hasnt been hauled through it whilst doing this most unrewarding of jobs. Ken Bates, one of the most loathed people inside of football if you speak to players and managers. Any slight ounce of respect I had for the guy (and I did have some) went down the pan today with his headline that read "Sven is full of bullsh*t!" How inciteful Mr Bates and a severe case of the pot calling the kettle black. The piece went on to say about how he wouldnt want to be in a trench in a war with Sven given his underhand tactics. Hardly a very parallel analogy is it?! The entire piece was scripted rubbish and ive no doubt that his words are being as good as fed to him by the Sports Editor at The Sun. Of course Ken Bates is reknowned for his outspokeness, but how ironic that his choice of topic today should be how disgusting a man Sven is, which is so coincidentally in line with The Suns current stance. As I stated in my first post, don't expect them to let this lye, in fact expect it to intensify further as we head towards June as The Sun continues its tradition of putting down our national side just in time for a major tournament. You may wonder why I buy The Sun. Well it's purely for entertainment value although I have to admit that i'm wondering why I bother as I find nothing entertaining anymore about a National Newspaper, seemingly doing it's utmost to destroy our national teams chances of doing well, at every opportunity. The cynical could suggest that an England failure sells more papers and provokes more response than an England win.... Spud55 Posted March 31, 2004 Report Share Posted March 31, 2004 Personally i have no problem with what Sven did, his contract was being renegotiated at the time, and mabye the FA were offering terms that were not great for Sven. He knew full well that Chelsea were interested in him so appears to have gone to see Kenyon, to discuss what Chelsea could offer him, and what he could offer Chelsea in the future. I have almost no doubt that Sven was always going to sign the contract for England, otherwise the meeting with Kenyon would not have happened, as Chelsea would have had to make official approaches, to the FA to talk to sven. Sven has signed the contract and i'm sure will take stock after Euro 2004, he will be the next Chelsea manager, but it wont be for a year or two yet, as Ranieri will not get sacked, god knows where the papers have got that from as from what i can remember Abramovic didn't ever expect Chelsea to be winning things this year anyway, he just wanted them to be up there. Certainly there's nothing of newsworthy interest apart from sensationalism that appeals to the easily tittilated and those who like nasty or pseudo-porn news about celebrities. Sorry if my words offend those who like it but that's my opinion. If I want to read news then I'll get one that at least tries to make it sound as though its actually reporting on proper news, rather than which bimbo had shagged whom/had plastic surgery at/has put in for divorce (delete as appropriate) or which celebrity has eaten which rodent/gone to which rehab climic/is wearing which latest fashion or what "reality TV" show is the current 5 minute craze. Call me elitist but I find all the Sun offers to be superficial, trite, pathetic and unneccesary. This extends to its sport which appears ot be a series of allegations, scandal and anything other than what happens during matches. They love to sneer, pour scorn on and generally attack whoever is the England manager, no matter who it is. If I were England's manager (and not for one moment would I do that thankless job) I'd boycott the Sun and any other tabloid totally. If they try to actually concentrate on the playing side of England and not on the private lives of its people or trying to undermine the nation's confidence in them. then maybe I'd take them a little more seriously. But that's asking fo rthe moon on a stick, isn't it? The best place for the Sun and its nasty little hacks who report in this manner is the bonfire. That's what you do with rubbish. The way the tabloids have conducted this witch hunt almost beggars belief,and i say tabloids because even though the sun is the most vocal the others are happy to join in.I leave to one side whether this is a "story" or not as all of the red tops are comics masquerading as newspapers and will run with anything if it will boost sales. No,what gets me is the self righteous bluster,the racist overtones in they're Sven hunt,and the colossal hypocrisy when they get behind "the boys " at the last minute after trying to undermine them for the whole of the run up,dont matter how many times i see it ,it STILL f**ks me of because i cant do anything about it,short of bombing the Isle of Dogs or whatever. I'd love to be able to phone Sven and say "alright Sven?,you carry on matey,the players like you,you're doin a good job and i'm pleased to see your goona be with us for a few years cause we've got a chance at the next two big tourneys."
