Boozy Bristolians Stock Up For Parties

Sunday December 30, 2007

Bristol looks set to have Britain's booziest New Year as the city's supermarkets have sold more beer, wine and spirits than any other place in the country.

Britons are gearing up for the big one

And as Bristolians stock up for the biggest party night of the year since Boxing Day, rum has been the biggest hit on their spirits list.

Tesco regional sales figures also show demand for champagne in the city has risen 22% compared with last New Year's Eve, while sales of beer have soared by 17% and wine has increased by 15%.

But the supermarket's sales map has thrown up some surprises, with Glaswegians buying more bottles of Malibu rum than anywhere else.

At the same time, Cheltenham has created the biggest demand for whisky, while tequila has been proving most popular in Bournemouth.

Tesco Beer Wines and Spirits Category Director Dan Jago said: "The map of what's been selling in the run up to New Year's Eve is interesting because it dispels quite a few regional stereotypes.

"Whoever would have thought that Malibu would be a best seller in Glasgow or that tequila would be the tipple of choice in Bournemouth?

It's also interesting to note that Bristol looks set for some lively parties.

"There seems to be a real feelgood factor which may be down to the success of Bristol City looking like promotion candidates to the Premiership."

Elsewhere, Birmingham is where the highest champagne and fine wine sales can be found and vodka is the top selling spirit in Cardiff.

Other regional figures for the last two weeks reveal the most Guinness has been bought in Liverpool, Leicester's favourite tipple is cider and absinthe is a best seller in Brighton.

Lager leads the way in Watford, top brandy buyers are in Newcastle, the UK's real ale capital is Leeds, Belfast's favourite party tipple is gin and Edinburgh's top drink is Drambuie.

Go us hey!
