headhunter
Just reading GJ'S comments on the main website regarding last might's game and noticed that he explained how the Watford player was getting so much length with his throw-ins: he was wearing a pair of table tennis gloves to give him extra gripIs that cheating? When GJ worked with John Beck at Cambridge these unsporting [?] methods were used in so far as the home players were given a towel by the ball boys to wipe on a wet ball whilst the away players were not.Quite honestly I'd be all for one of our players wearing these gloves if they have that effect. All of their throwins appeared to be launched into our penalty with a trajectory as good as a free lick.Who is our long throw specialist ..... who would you like to see wearing the gloves !!! Geoff65
No one - I don't approve of the long throw as an alternative to creative football.
Red_Mat
Bradley Orr has got a reasonably long throw which can reach the penalty area, but I wouldn't say we particularly use it as a tactic as a lot of teams do.If there are no rules against it, then why not. Trouble is, when teams start catching on, everyone does it and eventually it'll either get banned or there won't be any point because all teams will do it! RedM
When I first heard GJ mention the extra grip from wearing the gloves I thought he was referring to all the shirt pulling Watford did last night! As for players with long throws, wasn't GJ asked recently what he says to his players with such throws, and he replied 'nothing, we don't have any!' I thought the rules were that they shouldn't provide grip. That's what the opinion around me was.

Mr Ed
It was apparent the gloves were worn purely for the throw-ins rather than warmth as the player had a short sleeved shirt on.Stoke's winner last night came via a similar route - long throw, flicked on header, goal. pidge
It is gamesmanship. There is no rule stating that gloves with grip are not allowed. I suppose it is like having a towel to dry the ball. Just bending the rules to their advantage.
The Man In Black
It is gamesmanship. There is no rule stating that gloves with grip are not allowed. I suppose it is like having a towel to dry the ball. Just bending the rules to their advantage. The lack of official statement could mean that the ref decides it's an unfair advantage and tells the player to remove them in the next break in play. Ultimately, it is the ref who decides what equipment players can and can't wear (in fact, when I was training I was told that if you don't notice that a player has dangerous studs on and injuries someone you could be liable. But that's a completely different point). And of course, there's always technicalities. There are extremely boring FIFA regulations about kit that goes into mind-bogglingly boring detail about what kit can and can't contain. The only thing it doesn't legislate against are boots - even the size of the manufacturer's logo on the goalkeepers gloves are covered. So if you wanted to be a really anally retentive official you could pull out one of those.Essentially though I agree with others. If they were to become commonplace you would very quickly see a new addition to the rules from the authorities.
