When Was The Last Time ?

Here's a question for those with long memories.

Was just wondering when was the last time we scored DIRECT from a free kick ?

Can't remember any this season or even that many in recent years to be honest. City teams of old seemed to be blessed with dead ball specialists such as Alan Walsh, Mickey Bell and the like who would smack 'em in for fun from all round the park !!

Is there a case for signing a free kick specialist in the summer? Other teams (judging by what I've seen on 'The Championship' or MOTD etc) don't seem to struggle in this area and are picking up 5/6 extra goals (sometimes more) as a result?

Any thoughts?

Who do you think should be taking our free kicks from around the box? :dunno: Seems McIndoe's got the job at the mo although IMO he doesn't often look like scoring from this area !!

Don't worry about free kicks, I just wish we would shoot from outside the area abit more often than we do instead of just losing possession.

its because while we have talented players like mcindoe (who came close at charlton) we let lee johnson take a 10 yard run up and blast every free kick into the centre of the wall

We have scored numerous goals over the last couple of years thanks to Johnson. The run up to the ball, stop your run, then dink it over the top to McCombe, Vasko, Keogh, A.N. Other has paid off well for us.

Didn't LJ score from a free kick against Yeovil last season ???

Nope - he scored a half-volley type goal at home against them.

The last direct free-kick I seem to recall is Luke Wilkshire against Chesterfield. Lost 4-2 at home but it was a significant game where the fans really got behind the boys.

Remember Micky Bell scoring two against Plymouth in the same game a few seasons back. Sweet.

We've got Micky Bell,

We've got Micky Bell,

We've got Micky,

We've got Micky,

We've got Micky Bell

And we got him cheap

And we got him cheap

And we got him

And we got him

And we got him cheap

Micky Bell, Bell, Bell

Micky Bell, Bell, Bell

read the first post - a DIRECT free kick

I read the first post. I was responding to the comment about Johnson blasting it in to the wall with the comment that his contribution from free kicks is actually very valuable even if we don't always go for the direct route.

and the comment is true. WHEN HE SHOOTS it often goes straight into the wall. there was no mention of his crossing ability

Not just in the same game, it was two in less than two minutes, in front of the Atyeo. I used to have a video clip of it but seem to have mislaid it somewhere now.

I was not mentioning his crossing but his clips over the top. Relevant because we often choose to use that very effective free-kick rather than shooting even when the ball is in range for a crack at goal.

I do believe that I am allowed to deviate just a little from the main thread. A chat about the last time we remember a direct free kick being scored would be a little dry. But to go with it anyway-

Bell away vs Southend c Sept 1997.

Bell at home vs Plymouth (I think) twice in a few mins in front of the Atyeo

Tinnion home vs Wycome around the same time.

but you took my point about lj not scoring direct from a freekick as if it was a criticism of his distribution from free kicks.

and it was luke wilkshire at home to chesterfield when we lost 4-1 during our 9 game losing streak

Brian Tinnion v Charlton - FA Cup 5th round 1994 ?

So no one has any sensible suggestions for when&who the last direct free kick goal was?

If you think about our players who have or have had the ability to shoot from free kicks then you begin to realise that it must of been a while ago.....Bell / Tinman....ALAN WALSH!

Cant think of any one who had the ability to shoot from dead ball last season.....

possibly Tinman or Bell was the last? Surely not........

*4-2. Dave Cotterill scored a late consolation.

No. Just making the point that his "chipped" free kick routine works well.
