Prostitution itself is at present not illegal in Slovakia but any form of pimping or organised soliciting is punishable by law. Like in any other major capital, you will find a steady supply of both street prostitutes, erotic massage salons and massage salons and strip bars fronting for brothels in Bratislava, as well as up-market escort services.

In the evenings and at night there are street sex workers spread around the Krizna street area, waiting for clients who cruise by in cars and taxis. Other areas include the highway Panonska towards the Hungarian border in Petrzalka, as well as a stretch of road near the Slovnaft refinery. Because of the grey legal status of prostitution, there is no guarantee of healthcare for prostitutes, many of whom are assumed to be drug addicts by the police. Homosexual prostitution is widespread in the area near the Blumental Church on Blumentalska.

In the centre, especially in some of the more expensive bars, there are women prostitutes preying on foreign men. Often, their ultimate goal is to rob the client so utmost caution is advised for those tempted to try for themselves. There are known cases of clients being drugged up and robbed of their belongings by gangs using women posing as prostitutes.

Sexual services by both men and women are also on offer on many Slovak internet chat servers and singles websites.

Semi-legal forms of prostitution are practised in erotic massage salons around town and around major roads throughout the country. While some of the business are legitimate salons only offering erotic dances, lap dancing, striptease and the like, many front for actual brothels. These establishments often use a variety of techniques to overcharge guests, especially if they only speak a foreign language. Other businesses operate as so called Privats - these are usually unmarked flats with several girls working on call or a drop-in basis.

There are a number of escort services in Bratislava, many advertising on the internet, mostly at up-market prices. Recently, the police have cracked down on some major such services on the grounds of soliciting.

Should you choose to look for sexual services in Bratislava, it is recommended you proceed only with extreme caution. Hotel receptions at seedier hotels and taxi drivers may be the best places to get tips and safety advice. Condoms are on sale at most hotel receptions, some condom machines are available in bars and clubs (but not always) and 24-hour gas stations and supermarkets also sell them.
