Look in the Kings Cross area. Plenty of good cheap hotels and good pubs for a pint or five. Train goes to Circular Key (for Opera House and Harbour Bridge). Bus goes to Bondi (for Girls and man eating Sharks). Beware as the girls you meet on the street in the area at night are very friendly and will want to charge a fee!!! Best not to look at the Architecture and say something like "Well blow me" as you may get injured in the stampede.

Anyone got any experience with cheap Sydney hostels or hotels?

Going later in the year just pricing things up..

stayed in Kings Cross, dirt cheap, short walk to circular quay

stayed in a place called Eva's Backpacker's worked out about £11 per night, but was back in 2005, if you are REALLY unluckly, like I was you will have to share a room with some scandinavian hotties, certainatly helped get shot of the jet lag.

Try and stay at Wake Up if you can. It's not the cheapest of places but in terms of hostels it's up there with the very best. I stayed there for 3 weeks or so back in May 2004 and loved every minute of it. My girlfriend works for STA Travel and she always recommends Wake Up to people.

It's right by the main train station, not too far from Darling Harbour, the casino and Paddy's markets. It's about a 30/40min walk to the Rocks (Harbour Bridge, Opera House etc) and is just off George Street which has lots of good bars etc on.

I actually tried to stay here the 2nd time was in sydney based on what I heard from others when travelling north, if you decide to stay here my only advice would be to book early as possible as I couldn't get in here and the general comment at the time was "it's great, if you can get in"

if you haven't already looked, www.tripadvisor.com will give you decent reviews on most of the hostels in sydney.

If you insist on going to Sydney, then I can't fault the recommendations. Just be careful in the King's Cross/Darlinghurst area; it's a Sink of Iniquity.-

Melbourne is far,far classier in every way, and of all the Australian capitals, you can't really go passed Hobart, if you have the time.

Further to my previous posting, it occurs to me that you might actually like Sinks of Iniquity! Just bear in mind that many an fine upstanding lad has suffered serious embarrassment gender-wise in Kings Cross.

Yep, just what I was going to say. I stayed there when it first opened in 2003 and thought it was the best hostel in Australia, maybe asides from Global Palace in Cairns, but it's by far and away the best in Sydney.

Good central location, close to the train station and the two main streets in Sydney - Pitt St and George St (I think!). Avoid Footprints on Pitt Street. I stayed there when I first landed and woke up to find roaches climbing the wall right in front of my eyes. Was minging and definately not what you want battling jet lag! :bruce_h4h:
