Almost Red Goblin-esque.......

Tonight could be the finest hour for Bristol's very own Winston Churchill.

Against seemingly impossible odds, Bristol City manager Gary Johnson has taken the club to its greatest challenge for a generation.

And just as Churchill inspired a nation to defy overwhelming odds more than 60 years ago, so Johnson will rally his troops before sending them into action against Crystal Palace.

The Premier League beckons for the Robins, who are now just two games away from a return to the top flight they last graced in 1980.

For Johnson and his brave men, the equation is simple - avoid defeat tonight and go on to meet either Hull or Watford at Wembley 11 days from now for the right to play in the Premier League next season.

It will be a result that puts this city back on the nation's sporting map and makes Bristolians proud.

But Palace are not about to give way without a fight and Herr Warnock's men will prove a tough nut to crack.

Now is the time for Bristol City supporters to stand together, hold their nerve in the face of testing circumstance and back their team like never before.

Written off by the pundits and underrated by the nation's bookmakers, Johnson's men have exceeded all expectations to emerge as the Championship's surprise package. The players now have a wonderful opportunity to silence their critics once and for all and to etch their names into Bristol sporting folklore.

James Callaghan was Prime Minister, the Cold War was at its zenith and flared trousers and platform shoes were in fashion when City last won promotion to English football's top flight. They were relegated four years later, since when Bristol has languished in the footballing wilderness, forced to look on enviously while cities of lesser standing have enjoyed Premier League status.

Bristol deserves Premier League football and Bristolians must tonight show why. Johnson is calling upon City loyalists to create a wall of sound in a bid to cheer his team on to Wembley and possible glory in the final on Saturday, May 24.

When the going gets tough inside Ashton Gate, as it surely will, City fans must stand shoulder to shoulder and transform the stadium into a seething cauldron of noise. Johnson likes to talk of the fans as City's 12th man and the team has seldom needed that support more than it does now.

Thoughts of the final must be shelved for now.

There is a job of work still to be done before City fans can dream of a trip to Wembley Stadium.

In fact, the players could do worse than adhere to Churchill's words.

The great man once said: "It is a mistake to try and look too far ahead; the chain of destiny must be grasped one link at a time."

Bristol City's destiny remains in their own hands and a place in history undoubtedly awaits tonight's winners.
