Premier League contemplate having a winter break

So just the premier league get a winter break, but the football league which has to play more games over the season has to struggle on with festive fixtures. Imagine if we'd had to face Man City in the cup with them having just come off a nice break. The festive fixture isn't the problem, people point to it as a reason for our poor performances at major international comps rather than just face the fact our national team isn't up to the standard of Europe/World's best.

How about if it's just the PL, then there's two weeks of focusing on the EFL?

Never happen. Football doesn't exist outside of the PL.

What they could consider instead is extending the PL by one week at either end and moving one of the games over the Christmas period to see if that makes a difference. Or maybe allow clubs to increase the number of registered players to all further flexibility in squad rotation.

Per The Times:

- PL tender document for 2019 to 2022 incudes provision for possible winter break

- FA rights contracts for FA Cup (both domestic and international) contain provision for possible removal of one round of replays with minimal financial penalty

- FA, PL and EFL all agree ideal would be break of two weekends after FA Cup 3rd round

- PL and EFL want FA Cup rebranded as midweek competition - FA is resisting that - and FA Cup contracts stipulate weekend ties must remain

- Possibility of EFL Cup semi-finals becoming single leg - to free up another midweek

- No possibility of winter break for EFL - not possible with 46 game season

You just know the big clubs are going to go on tours to Asia/USA and play a couple of games in those two weeks.

Will make absolutely no difference to the national side. Wales did alright in the Euros without a winter break.

thats exactly what'd happen. Chinese owned teams would err umm etc etc

International breaks are the most miserable times of the year, I'd be interested to know the thoughts behind any fan who thinks it'd be a good thing.

There would still be football on as it would only be the Premier League break. A break would help the national teams in tournaments and English teams in the Champions League.

Personally I think two weekends of televised Championship, League one and League two games would be a refreshing change

They only play 38 games a season, all the money in the world, massive squads and now they want 2 weeks off in winter? If they want to play less games, campaign for the Champions league to be returned to the European Cup.

You actually think Harry Kane plays 38 games in a season?

Probably plays close to 50 games, maybe more.

Nobody has asked for fewer games as far as I can see anyway.

Tons of ex players and managers say that a winter break would really help.

Wouldn't help our national side one bit.

The problem with our national side is the fact that you have a very small pool of players who are regularly playing at the top level to pick from. The number of foreign imports has in some ways revolutionised the modern game, however it comes to the detriment of our national side. When you have two English Premiership teams playing, and you sometimes are lucky to get one or two English players on the pitch, that is where you will find the national side falls apart.

Of course the likes of France, Spain, Italy etc will benefit from a 2 week break in the English game - their players will be refreshed. The England players will be even worse because they'll have even less games to try and get selected for their clubs match day squads.

It will help the English national side out if you cap how many foreigners you can have in a side. Even 3 homegrown players in the match squad would be better than it currently is!!

In recent years Britain's bad weather has struck more in February than December or January, so when would we have the break?

Assorted European leagues have a break in December / January when they do have bad weather. (3rd round of the FA Cup early January)

What is the purpose of these breaks? They have them in Scotland, so the owners take Celtic & Rangers abroad to play prestige friendlies meaning no recuperative break for the players.
