I’ve long been a believer that for some players, especially those close to the first team (not in all cases) that training with the first team, learning the first team system, the little tricks and stuffs that top players do, is better preparation than going down to Lg2, playing a different style of football, under potentially inferior coaching, with inferior players, against opponents you won’t come up against in the Championship. Alex Scott at 17 (18 in Aug) isn’t gonna learn the sophisticated patterns of play in Lg2 at say FGR, where the ball will be pumped over his head every 5 seconds. Someone like Louis Britton might relish it. I also think there are some benefits of our own u23s developing together (and playing like the first team). In the past some of our best u23s might be out on loan, so we aren’t necessarily fielding our best u23s (reasons for / against), but also perhaps moving some players up from u18s to u23s too quickly, giving them a false sense of their development. Keeping them at Failand means they are ready to come straight in to the first team if Nige needs them, or as he has started to elude to, be part of the first team anyway. You can keep their minutes ticking over in the u23s.5 points

TBW I have no desire to talk to myself, much prefer to share football-related information, which may or may not be of interest to others, which is what I believe this forum is designed for.4 points

I saw a picture of one of their new signings yesterday and he looked like what Kryten from Red Dwarf would look like if you drew eyebrows and a haircut on him with a black marker.3 points

Crikey, when your lucks out it's out. Did they catch whoever done that to their pitch?2 points

The accounts have been filed for the football club; though are still outstanding and overdue for the Memorial Stadium and BRFC 1883 which is the holding company of both. This is to June 2020 so the year before last missing most of Covid's financial effects. The loss is down year on year from £3.3m to £2.4m. More importantly WAQ has followed the Lansdowns in capitalising debt to the order of about £15m in teh football club meaning that the net liabilities have massively fallen from £15.9m to £1.8m which looks a lot healthier. I have no idea what his personal wealth is but Rovers no longer look the time-limited financial basket case they did when they were being funded by a rapidly exhausing credit facility secured by a charge on the ground. This last season - the season of the three managers and no spectators through Covid - will be much worse as it will be for all football clubs. https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/00051828/filing-history2 points

I may be misremembering Bell but I do not recall him standing out at all. So I had a look at his minutes. 36 minutes in 5 appearances for first team. So probably a harsh view on my part. I just don’t remember anything standout which is acceptable over a small sample size. Just remember with Conway really good movement and composure. Scott having a really mature few games in midfield, wise beyond his years. Edwards a fearlessness and ability to take players on 1v1. With Bell remember a lot of running but nothing special on the ball. I’d like to see all of them more and we probably will in the friendlies. I’d just put Conway and Scott on another level and Owura a bit higher up because we lack options in those wide areas. Janneh I want to see more because he has had some exposure to league football and he will be physically more mature as he is older. He may not make the grade but it is time to find out imo.2 points

I don’t see how we can know with Bell. He got his place in the team and immediately the Rolls curse got him. Nige did speak about him as “a smiling assassin” or words to that effect, and he clearly rates him. Could be the dark horse.2 points

Scott and Conway are the two that excite me more than the others and I`m hoping they are both in and around the first team.2 points

A very thoughtful and very reasonable assessment from Nige. He certainly knows how to oversee and manage a squad of players. He says all the right things from a fans and players perspective and keeps the players keen and enthusiastic to desperately want a place in the matchday squad. To me he’s very different in the way he conducts his interviews to any other City manager that I can remember and that’s very refreshing to see2 points

NP explaining his thinking on loans re our younger players: https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/big-chance-bristol-citys-young-5635963 Makes sense to me and sends a hugely positive message to all the younger players.1 point

Cheers for that. Is it the BRFC 1883 ones which are the crux, as they will include the debt to Dwane Sports?1 point

Lathwell was absolute class, saw him spray a very angry Courtney Walsh around the ground once, picking bouncers from in front of his nose. He was a real Devon lad though who didn’t fancy the England team mentality of the time and eventually gave up altogether.1 point

Well he has been firmly part of the squad for two seasons now. It would be odd to mention him imo. Point taken though. Why I would be trying to get him to sign a new deal. Tricky times because he’d need a pay rise but it is getting to the sell time if we don’t tie him down. New deal, better wages and a release clause for teams in Europe or premier league(or gentleman’s agreement because not sure if england allows release clauses).1 point

I’d personally add Owura to that but can maybe add him to Janneh who I’d like to see more of. Scott and Conway I think are good enough now from what I have seen. Think Towler, Britton, Bell and Pearson need loans personally.1 point

Series won, now really everyone who hasn’t played a game should be brought in for the last ODI to make up for the disturbance to them and having to come into the bubble1 point

Cringeworthy in that cheap tat kit with that stupid badge which looks like something from Thunderbirds. You can almost see the strings attached to the dummy. Why do they make all of their new recruits hold up that rediculous scarf. It's like the final part of the initiation ceremony. Then again if you're that desperate and have no shame you'd do almost anything I suppose.1 point

I can see why you'd think that, but believe it or not, he's a top striker !1 point

Thought this would be the case. With everyone together at the training ground, a trimmer senior squad is gonna need the young’uns for training anyway…let alone those who’ve proved themselves good enough to be around the team. Nige likes his 11v11s too. Pretty happy with this.1 point

Thanks for the question. I've spoken to the team on this as imo it's a fair and good question and have been told the following. Based on there probably being around 12 Gold and 11 Silver games and adding on the cost of a membership you would be paying £547 if you hadn't purchased a season card and had gone via that option. With the other SC benefits you have saved over a £100.00 so a season card is still the most economical way to watch. I take your point on board and will mention it to Richard Gould at our next meeting. Hop to catch up with you soon at the Gate. Cheers Jerry1 point
