The England players have red lettering and numbering on the back of their shirts instead of the usual blue.

Yeah, sorry I meant South Africa didn't

I'm sure when we were in Australia we changed our colours for the Jane McGrath day

They better play better next week, but I’m glad I only have tickets for the first two days based on that performance. Now let’s see what this new England side are really made of.

It’s all good and well playing ‘Baz Ball’ on flat pitches in mid-summer but they need to adapt, especially on pitches that offer a bit of everything (which Old Trafford will). They need to be more watchful and earn the right to play the big shots.

While much of the focus will be on the batting, the bowling was the difference between the two sides. SA prepared and approached it properly, we did not. You can't go into a Test with your 4 seamers having barely bowled a ball in 6 weeks. And then, having initially bowled well after tea yesterday to get back into it, England reverted to default of trying to bounce the tail out, with predictable consequences.

Can’t really agree there. We bowled them out for a par score so the bowlers did okay. We produced two sub par batting displays where batsmen again got themselves out on my occasions

Let’s see how Harmer does away from the Chelmsford turners.  Brave to bat first on this type of morning

I've been out since just before the start, but I saw the toss just before leaving and would have said 'foolhardy', unintelligible even.

South Africa's bowling attack destroyed England twice in the first Test; this morning's overhead conditions were conducive to their fast bowling attack, especially as England would surely have been petrified at producing a repeat performance, yet they picked an extra spinner and chose to bat first.

How long before Crawley edges one to slip..

I came back just after England started batting, and when I saw that Lees was out early, I feared the worst.

To be fair to Crawley, though, he is still there, which means we have an opener ready to start again tomorrow morning.

Just got back from two days at Old Trafford. SA completely misread the pitch and got their selection totally wrong. So pleased to see Foakes get his second Test ton (I saw his first on debut in Galle coincidentally). Both he and Stokes coped with the conditions the best and made hay while the sun shon. I wouldn’t fancy chasing much, so fingers crossed we keep the ball reversing and get the innings win today.
