PORTSMOUTH away in the FA cup. Bobby Gould equalised in the last minute and the crowd went mental.

no, not us celebrating but Pompey fans charging around looking for City fans trying to celebrate and giving us a kicking.

the old bill took the day off and there was no segregation in the ground

in those days if you were adventurous you wore a white lab technician's coat (or a Crombie) with your Ben Sherman shirt, to look the part

hiding behind 'Biffer' or 'Acker' seemed like the only safe place to be

ah the good old days

I recall many an adventurous coach trip with him driving.

Southampton, must of been around about 79-80,got all the way there,Old Bill were waiting for us,informed us game had been postponed(snow),the train ended up having thousands of pounds worth of improvements made on the way back, got back to Temple Meads just in time to get to the Gas Works,West Ham having the misfourtune to be visiting that dump.Ran in to a few Pompey fans, whose game at Port Vale(?) had also been called off, mass brawl under the M32 with the Queens Head sags, into ground just as the Hammers stormed the Tote, all good innocent fun.

Man U, Man C & Stoke in the 1st division days when the norm was for the train to be bricked ..... Orient away in the snow via broken train & no heat .... Swindon turned up that day but were soon off whilst Gillingham was the other one as it was bleedin miles (or so it seemed) to walk back ... good trips

Coach load of us from WsM were enroute to this game, we ended up watching Plymouth at home against who I can’t remember. We got quite a reception!

What year was this......i don't recall ever getting turned over at Wolves ? ....then again the demon drink may have been taken.....

Think it was the 1973 cup match which we lost 1-0.

Pre-match I recall there was a network of corridors leading to the turnstiles behind the massive terrace. Came down a hill with the train lot and watched several City, who had arrived earlier, running a few Wolves in this maze of alleys. Abiding memory of the match was the Knowle West lot redecorating the back of their fresh painted yellow/gold stand with red spray paint. After the match we headed down the infamous subway. We got through ok but loads of ours were attacked with a hail of milk bottles a few minutes later. Lots of claret in the corridors of the train back.

Went down on a private coach, Jan '73, was in the Pompey pub before the game, City had a go at their end, got kicked off and we were put up the uncovered terrace, Pompey were all round us, mad *******, a lot of so called faces didn't travel for the game, went in the supporters club after being ejected from the ground, saw Bobby Gould score that late equaliser as you you could watch the game from there, big window!,  our coachload stayed there for a few hours pissing it up, beat 'em 4-1 in the replay, the next round was away to Wolves, what an eventful day that was!

Often wondered if the milk bottle attack was a one-off just for us, pretty wild, I ended up with a cut hand, was wandering around on my own till managing to hook up with the rest of our coach lot, mostly Hartcliffe and Withywood lads, crazy, no hiding in a pub and claiming a "result" in those days

Was there that day, didn't even get off the train!, claimed the fare back at Temple Meads on the Monday even though it was a normal service train not a special, also went to the Rovers-West ham game

No, not just us. Think most away fans at the time were subjected to that particular ‘ambush’.

I remember the York game in 84. As a student in Leeds, I got a local train early doors, enjoying a few pints in a pub near the Minster. Mistake 1 was trying  to take two empty beer bottles into the ground - wanted for my roommates home brew  - which led to a tricky discussion with police as they were confiscated. Mistake 2 was joining the police escort to the station (around the houses) at the end of the game. Train was parked in a siding at the edge of the station and, as I had no ID on me and I could not persuade the police that I needed to go to Leeds, I was forced aboard the special. Good game though - 1-1? - between top two sides in the division.  York was a really nice ground to visit - nice people.  And - and I may well be a bit senile  on this - but I somehow recall that that programme was complimentary to away fans?

.this is why we WENT to football in the seventies , and why a lot of the boys we were knocking around with at the time drifted away as the OB and the courts started to impose , what some would see as , disproportionate sentences to anyone unlucky enough to get their collar felt . I've said it before but i'm agog ( and the country NEEDS Gogs) at the new generation of young men  that can watch this stuff nowadays WITHOUT the adrenalin rush this used to provide on any given Saturday. They're obviously' better people' than we were  , or we had a lower boredom threshold perhaps ? Or was it just that we had bugger all else to do ....who knows ?

It's probably proof positive that the human race is evolving and /or we're becoming more civilized but i for one am glad i never missed it ?.....

What the human race is becoming is boring, safety first and a bit soft.we had a sense of belonging and comradeship that today’s young un’s couldn’t begin to understand, all for one and one for all,if you like.
