Went with my Dad, we were in the open end behind the goal (for some reason) , went mad when Fear scored.

Was in the open end with my dear old dad for the initial tie

He was proudly wearing his new sheepskin coat

The Leeds fans IIRC robbed the kiosk behind the Open End , but anyway ... decided to lob Clark’s Pies into City fans in Park End

One landed right on my old mans head and I can still see him now with gravy dripping down his new sheepskin

:laughcont:

Great ball from Sir Gerry for Feats goal

Thanks for linking this article, which brings back such wonderful memories: almost 45 years ago, and I still remember it so well; an afternoon kick-off due to the miners' strike, our trip on a Supporters Club coach organised by the late Beryl Fudge.

As a young schoolboy, I well remember my astonishment when we drove in to Leeds, staring out of the coach as we drove under the washing lines sagging with clothes and sheets stretching across the road, thinking it was just like something out of Coronation Street (different county, I know).

My astonishment changed to trepidation as we approached Elland Road, Leeds fans including young kids banging on the coach and throwing stones and just about anything they could get their hands on at the windows.

And then the match, which seemed to pass all too quickly, although the twenty minutes or so after City scored felt more like an hour.

I remember also squeaking, rather than cheering, when City scored, surrounded as we were by Leeds supporters, and the awful trip back to the coaches, which seemed to have been parked miles away from the stadium.

The local Police were not much help either: when my friend and I asked whether they might escort us back to our coach - even as schoolboys, we were being threatened by adult Leeds fans - they said that it was our own fault for coming to Leeds!

I found the following quotes from the article very interesting, especially the one about Gary Collier: was he really only 18 at the time? Crazy.

'Merrick and his 18-year-old colleague at centre-back, Collier, were displaying considerable poise despite playing before a crowd significantly more populous and fervent than they were used to.'

'I was just goalside of Norman Hunter, who had hold of my shirt. I pushed it forward with my right foot, and screwed my shot round with my left. I didn't see it go in, because Hunter had hit me by then and I was flat on my face.'

'Gow, in midfield was everywhere, and long before the end had outrun and outfought the leading Leeds warrior, Bremner. Not many players can claim such distinction.'

Finally, is that John Sillett in the photo at the end of the article?

I would have been 15 and went up after an overnight stay in Liverpool with my older brother who had started university there.

We had no idea where to go in the ground and ended up in the enclosure, packed in with the most partisan and aggressive fans I'd ever encountered.

I've followed City around the country in all 4 divisions but I've been anywhere that even approached that level of hostility before or since.

We didn't move when City scored, and didn't even speak until we were well away from the ground, it was that threatening.

What a game though, and what a fantastic, momentous victory - people talk about Liverpool and Man.Utd, but in my City supporting life this game goes down as our biggest win.

So, it would seem I was more brave than I thought, as I actually 'squeaked' when we scored.

It was threatening, though: I was wearing my scarf, but it was hidden under my coat the whole match, only seeing the light of day once our coach was leaving Elland Road.

I remember being one of the 37k crowd at the gate when Keith Fear scored, but listened to the replay on radio bristol.  I do believe it was herbie gillam who was coming on with regular reports or was it a full commentary?

I think it was commentary . We were in the local school playground , having a kickaround as the game was being played.
