  1. As a guide, I’m on my third pair of Brooks which are specialised running trainers. On average, they last me about 700k which is about 2 1/2 months running. So I’d reckon you would probably need a second pair by the time of the marathon - but the investment is worth it
  2. Nope. You’ve lost me. Prestons our last game, Blackburn’s next if the orders not rejigged
  3. It’s always better to go to a specialist shop if you can - more so as the wrong trainers can do real damage and you can try before you buy. Feet fitted to shoes does seem a bit extreme for normal runners though - as long as you know your size you should be fine. In the absence of going to a store and having a proper video gait analysis , what I can recommend is this: https://www.brooksrunning.com/en_gb/ShoeFinder It’s the brooks website but that’s not the point. It should tell you what type of shoe you need and you can use that to inform searches elsewhere. But if your shoes are years old and you’re running that much, you’re definitely due an upgrade!

(Trying to ascertain how much is donated to RNIB per entry but if it’s a reasonable amount may do this)
  5. I think you’ve probably got to consider that, IIRC, you were running every other day, 7s and 10s. You’ve added in a 12.5 to that and the day after your “normal” longer loop - it’ll naturally take time to adjust. I had the same last year - I was typically running 5 days, mainly 7s and the odd 10 plus, and it was psychologically and physically tough when I went to every day and upped the distance. Still a lot of days now when I feel tired before I go out and think I can’t face it - bizarrely, they often tend to be longer and better runs as the legs wake up 2k in. So, yeah, too much is totally natural. Best advice I can give is - while ensuring you don’t over run to the point of injury - next time you feel tired try a test 1-2k and see if you feel up to carrying on. You will, as your mind won’t let you quit. Also, “route fatigue” is a big thing - definitely found that in lockdown. Work used to take me, in addition to Bristol, to London/Dublin/Belfast so I’d only run from home once a week. To go to running from home every time is mentally tough - small hills feel like big ones before you go out. Vary the route as much as possible and try new ones often. Finally, join the challenges on Strava. A virtual medal is a strange motivation but it works!
  6. Pretty consistent as well mate - per my calculations, first and second 5k done in the same time. Good skills.
  7. I got the other half the premium version as part of her birthday present (romance!). She’s a casual runner - wants to see as you distance, how quick she is per segment, average pace etc. She had all that in the free version and, per her, for someone like her there wasn’t anything extra on the premium to make it worth it. She gets more detailed segment leaderboards and ability to set goals, but nothing game changing
  8. Ahem. Don’t try this at home kids. (Probably about 20k of walks in there tbf but running on average 12k a day.) Bizarrely, any less than 10k a day and my legs feel bad, I run better if I’m doing that distance day in day out.
  9. Back when we could, I ran with a mate round Bristol. Stride for stride. I did mine through the Strava phone app, he did his on a Garmin watch and then synced to Strava. His distance was greater and his segments were quicker than mine - even though we ran the same distance in the same time. I think that tells me that all of them are *wrong*. Add in that I’ve done formal 10k’s which various apps have logged at 9.8k and 10.1k and that backs that theory up. Strava itself I find the main issues are the “pickup” at the start (my first k is always slower than anything else) and where there are things overhead (Two Tunnels in Bath is great for random times!) Summary - none of them are perfect but I think they’re all broadly in the same incorrectness range
  10. Probably multiple times a week mate, my house is on the David Wilson estate they built 2-3 years ago that runs parallel to Gravel Hill. Come out of there and turn straight down GHR most days - either going all the way down to Wickwar Road or going through Yate Rocks. Loads of good running routes round there (Wickwar, Horton, Old Sodbury) when this is over and you can park round your old dears again!
  11. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-52702075 News from the return of Korean football. FC Seoul have achieved the impossible. They’ve filled their ground with more c***s than you’d find at the Memorial Ground...
  12. Today’s run dedicated to the great man. Thought about running the whole way with a sponge in hand and carrying anyone I saw on the floor but thought better of it.
  13. I reckon it’s potentially gait based but potential for a different injury. If I look at my trainers when I think they’re “done” my left front has worn to nothing and my right front has semi worn, but the backs are ok - meaning I clearly come down hard on the front section of the foot - both sides but more to the left. If I’m doing that, it indicates a naturally stronger left side but also indicates more pressure. That means my running gait is front land, left. That also means I am more liable to get aches on that side. On a bizarre basis a low ache may not mean though you have a problem with that specific area, it may be higher up the leg and to compensate your body overcompensates the pressure lower down. So, I’d advise doing two things: - Gait analysis - See a sports masseuse as the problem may be caused by a knot in a different part of the leg you’re not aware of
  14. It’s my daughters birthday. It’ll be good to have an excuse not to do what she wants ??
  15. I’ve gone from starting out on Karrimor (boo) then through Adidas ultra boost and am now on my third pair of Brooks. Key difference for me in Brooks is cushioning - it’s not over-cushioned, but you don’t need an insole which I found was needed on other shoes. Tend to replace the shoes quarterly, as they’ve done about 900k by then and Brooks have felt comfortable to the end. You can also do a virtual gait analysis on their website. So, yeah, Brooks for me - would recommend the Ghosts primarily.
  16. Here’s the thing I don’t understand from Rodmans audio. Per him, they won’t be playing in front of a crowd until January. How the **** would the playing squad of the gas know the difference???
  17. Yep, undoubtedly. It’s a mix of people who are gym bunnies and those who haven’t run before and are in a real mish-mash of gear - I’m talking 20 year old tops, non running daps and Ill fitting shorts. No problem with that, we’ve all been there, and fair play to them!
  18. Southern League (Weston & Yate level) looking to terminate season immediately. To be decided whether null and void or final table worked on ppg basis: https://www.betvictorsouthern.co.uk/News/124013/League-Statement-24th-March-Season-201920-
  19. Saw Rovers trending and thought they’d gone bust. Disappointed to see it was just this
  20. This isn’t a subject for Levity. But Edwina Currie having no idea is very, very funny:
  21. I think they haven’t limited alcohol to three items only in Sweden yet.
  22. Why don’t we do “The OTIB virtual 10k race”. Do it as handicap - everyone says what their best 10k time is and then the winner is worked based on how close they get to that? Get everyone out in a weekend, easy to track in Strava?
  23. Really? Off the top of my head, I can remember him trying to introduce unnecessary and unneeded end of the pier acts on at least two of the five occasions. Think on “how many is this” debacle for example. These press conferences have been good not because of Boris but despite him. What people need is surety - not soundbites. That’s why Sunak was so good - clear policy, rationally explained. Likewise Whitty and Vallance. Boris has been bluster, vaugeness and vapid. Bizarrely, the best thing to happen to this country in the last three months was Javid resigning. I can’t say how he would have done here, but it’s apparent that Boris and Dom wanted Sunak as he was easy to control - and in the GE campaign he seemed to be a lick spittle. He’s come in - and has grasped the nettle fantastically - and I say that as a Labour man. He’s clearly realised he is unsackable - losing a second chancellor in 3 months would make the PM untenable - and therefore driven the agenda. You can see it was his work today. In short, things are happening despite BoJo (why wasn’t his first point to clarify Hancocks claim on QT that we had an immunity test which contradicted BoJo claim yesterday for example). He inspires no calm - he’s lucky with Whitty, Vallance and Sunak to give him that but it is really showing up his own shortcomings (NB - I think, realistically, there are now limited guns to fire. I’d probably suggest that daily conferences have limited impact from here and would rather hear a statement from Whitty at 5pm, to be followed by Boris at 7pm if deemed required)
  24. I’m shamelessly bumping this. Now we’re in a position with gyms closed and pretty much any socialising banned, one thing that is allowed - and even encouraged - is running, while still keeping the appropriate distance. In the next few months it’s going to be vital for us all to get out and about as and when we can for our mental well-being so join the Strava club (whether you’re an everyday runner or just need something to help you focus) and push on with your fellow reds
  25. Wage guarantee of up to 80% of wages, up to a max of £2500 per month, backdated to 1st March
