This is our rearranged St Stephen’s Day fixture. Back then Luton we’re two points above us with a game in hand now it’s still a two point difference but they have two games in hand.

It is on the red button.

Kenilworth Road has quite possibly the most odd away entrance of any ground in the EFL. After going down a small alleyway at the side of the stadium, the impression is of queuing to go into someone’s house and then through their back garden before getting to the seated area of the Oak Stand.

They are hoping a new 23,000-seat stadium will be built on the site of a former power station in the centre of Luton, but there are ups and downs with the proposals and earlier this month a decision on the plans to develop the land near the M1 were deferred.

Just for added giggles Andy Davies was going to officiate and this was announced on the day Nigel Pearson was fined £5000 for comments made against him after the QPR match. However, Davies has been removed from the fixture as rules state a referee cannot be appointed to the same team within four weeks unless it's absolutely necessary.

On Saturday The Hatters' five-match unbeaten run came to an end at Bramall Lane as two quickfire Sheffield United strikes early in the second half gave the Blades all three points. Town were already trailing to two goals inside three minutes, when central defender Reece Burke was sent off for pulling Brewster back when he was in on goal with half-an-hour still to play. So he won’t feature tonight.

Their top scorer is Elijah Adebayo with 11 goals in 24 appearances already this season, he joined them in February 2021 from Walsall for an disclosed fee. Defender Kal Naismith and midfielder Jordan Clark have been the other stand-out players.

We are likely to be without James, Atkinson and King. James is recovering from a foot injury, Atkinson is currently suffering with an issue with his back, whilst King could also be forced to watch on from the sidelines due to a hamstring injury.

Have a feeling that H-NM will notch his first City goal tonight.

    Referee: Geoff Eltringham
    Assistant Referee: Akil Howson
    Assistant Referee: Michael George
    Fourth Official: John Busby

    Pubs for away fans include:

    • Bobbers Supporters Club, 101 Oak Road, Luton, LU4 8AA
    • Beech Hill Conservative Club, 18a Leagrave Road, Luton, LU4 8HZ
    • The White House, 1 Bridge Street, Luton, LU1 1SA which is a Wetherspoon outlet, https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/pubs/all-pubs/england/bedfordshire/the-white-house-luton
    • Bricklayers Arms, 16-18 High Town Road, Luton, LU2 0DD. This quirky pub, which has been run by the same landlady for over 30 years, is popular with Hatters fans on match days, has TVs in both bars. The six hand pumps serve a variety of guest beers from breweries all over the nation with a choice of light, amber and usually a mild. Draft Belgian beers and two real ciders are also available.

Last season we drew 1-1 away and lost 2-3 at home against them. Our head to head record is remarkably close we have won 22, lost 22 and drawn 18. They are currently sitting in 13th place on 35 points. Back in September at Ashton Gate it finished 1-1, Baker scored for us and they equalised in stoppage time, the highlights are here: https://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/highlights-bristol-city-1-1-luton-town/

Their fans forum the ‘Luton outlaws’ contains this notice: ‘What you read on here is 100% conjecture, fiction, lies, bullshit and complete bollocks. If you want to be taken seriously, you are in the wrong place.’ It can be viewed here:  https://members.boardhost.com/lutonoutlaws/

In May 2020,Nathan Jones was reappointed as their manager, almost 18 months after originally leaving the club to manage Stoke City. In his first press conference, Jones spoke of his "regret" and "remorse" over the way he initially left the club and that he understood the mixed fan reaction to his exit and return, with hopes that he could earn fans trust back. Jones went on to successfully guide Luton to Championship safety on the final day of the season with a 19th place finish, despite the club being in 23rd place when he re-joined. In the following season, Jones achieved a 12th place finish after gathering 62 points (11 more than us) which was their highest points total in the second tier since the 1981–82 season.

Jones is a devout Christian who credits his faith with getting him through bad times. He has several religious tattoos on his body including praying hands and the crucifixion on his left bicep and forearm, Jesus Christ on his right bicep, and Michaelangelo's 'The Creation of Adam' across his back. "It keeps you grounded. There's a lot of temptations, a lot of pitfalls nowadays, especially for a sportsman – and I think through God's guidance I've been able to steer clear of them. Through the hard times I've always had the stability of the Lord in my life and my family background has kept me on the straight and narrow." Nathan Jones does not hide his faith and is very open to mentioning it during press conferences with the term 'God willing' often being used. Jones is bilingual, able to speak both English and Spanish.

Earlier this month assistant-manager Mick Harford returned to working full-time after completing his course of radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer before Christmas.

Players that have played for both clubs include Tony Thorpe, Tyreeq Jamal Adeshina Oliveira Bakinson (wow) and Henri Lansbury.

    Luton trivia

    • In 2009, Luton were relegated to the Conference for the first time in over 89 years, after a tumultuous few years off the pitch which saw points deductions and administration. It would be a tough baptism of fire in non-league, as the Hatters did not achieve promotion back to League Two until 2014. They participated in two play-off finals whilst in the fifth tier, losing to AFC Wimbledon and York City respectively.
    • In 2013 they became the first non-league side in history to defeat a Premier League team in the FA Cup.They beat Norwich 1- 0 at Carrow Road and eventually advanced to the fifth round of the competition.
    • The Hatters avoided relegation on the final day of the 2019/20 season with a 3-2 win against Blackburn Rovers. They did so with the help of two own goals as they came from behind. Winning three and drawing two of their five games at the end of that season.
    • Luton’s current longest serving player is Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu, who has been with the Hatters since their non-league days. The midfielder, who is a fans favourite, has achieved three promotions in that time, scoring in each division from the Conference to the Championship.
    • One of their biggest wins was a 12–0 victory over Bristol Rovers in the Third Division South on 13 April 1936.

I have a distinct memory of us losing 2-1 there last season, although it was 1-1 before they scored the winner with a low shot from the edge of the box. I try to forget the opposition’s goals as well.

  2. I used to shake my head in despair when I read some of the negative comments about Antoine on here.
He was one of the few who actually gave me hope. We are so much more fun to watch now he’s fit again.

Ward AND Linningtom….eff me.  A shit sandwich if ever I saw one.

I’m constantly amazed how Gavin Ward is viewed by the EFL as good enough to referee at Championship level. He’s never better than mediocre.

The only worry I have in regards to towel throwing is I suspect Martin and O’Dowda’s year extension needs to be triggered in January, possibly even by end of December because of pre-contract rules.  But that’s only two players to worry about, not 10-12 like last season.  Simpson has a year option but that surely won’t be triggered.

If either has entered into negotiations we will soon find out I reckon.

Danny Simpson has a year-extension clause? OMG. Please tell me, Dave, the club is the only party that can extend.

I like Vyner, and what I mean is I think he's okay for a team in the bottom half of the Champ, and doesn't deserve some of the criticism he gets on here.  Having said that, when I saw from kick off that Kalas was RCB3 and Zak was CB3 I was shocked.  Mitrovic just played on Zak and poor old Zak cannot impose himself physicality on a player like that.

I blame that on Nige.  He saw the same not work v Brum (a) v Deeney.

Hopefully Atkinson did enough last week v Fulham (against Mitro for some of it) and today for 40 minutes to realise that he can play Kalas | Atkinson | Pring going forward.  Zak is okay as a RCB3 or RB.  Just not central.

The same manager who played Riley Towler in a two v Millwall. Who played that midfield at Sheff Utd. Who didn't realise Andy King had been booked against QPR. Who has made little impact on us defensively in 11 months in charge. In Nige we trust...

You’d obviously prefer the look at me interviews of LJ who basically looked down his nose at us fans & trying to be too clever. Pearson says it how it is with no bluster. Doesn’t happen enough in todays world. Most of the press ask stupid bloody questions . The decent journalists he does actually engage with .

How did you make that leap to me liking LJ’s interviews. Flawed logic.
I just prefer less sneering, a bit of tolerance (for the odd daft question) and a realisation that you can cut through to the supporters who are quite interested in most information about the club. It’s not that difficult.

Or perhaps the journo could prepare a differently worded question, or have a secondary more open question ready if he gets the type of response above.

You ask the right question, Nige will talk the hind legs off a donkey.

He’s laid out the ground rules enough times, e.g. don’t ask me about individual transfers, you’ll know when there’s something to announce.  Don’t ask me about my tactics for the upcoming game.

You can either try to work with him, build rapport, even ask him to perhaps not be so closed on certain things, or you can set yourself up for an interview where you glean nothing insightful.  How you then “sell” that back to your readers is your problem, not Nige’s.

You can see the ones who’ve built a good rapport with him, they get away with more than others.  Also be prepared that your killer question might’ve been asked by an earlier person.

I suspect Nige sees the Dave Barton media interview as his way of talking to the fans.

There's some truth in what you say - some questions could be framed better - but come on, Dave, it's pretty clear his regular default position is a patronising, slightly sneering one.

Perhaps it's just me, but I prefer people who are not always looking to make a point. Just answer the question/deal with the issue in a straightforward, respectful way. It makes me cringe to see a grown man acting like he does sometimes.

Dave Barton's questions are much worse - general waffle - but he doesn't put him away (because they are colleagues).

  8. I'd say it's pretty tedious. He knows exactly what's behind the question - just decides to play the smart a**e.

He forgets he's really talking to the fans. Plays the man (the journalist) rather than the ball (the supporters, who just like a bit of info).

  9. Need quick, technical, mobile players to, at least, compete with Fulham. Not sure I’d have much faith in AK being able to help us on that score. But accept options are limited.

Ultimately I can’t really see it making much difference who plays where tomorrow. We might give them a game but they’ll find a way through sooner or later. Probably sooner. If we were 2-0 up with ten minutes left and drew, I’d still think that an excellent result.

    Maybe.

Last time Fulham won 7-0 (blackburn away) they followed up with a 1-0 win at Posh, a 4-1 win home to Barnsley, followed up by four consecutive draws and a defeat, then the game against us in the cup. Then they go and win 7-0 away again, albeit against a team that defended like a pub team.

Skybet is back to 14/1 for us to win and Fulhams next game after us is Birmingham at home and they are currently 13/2, despite having an inferior away record than us and below us in the form tables. There must be some big bets going on Fulham, even at 1/5.

I checked the odds yesterday, thinking I’ve never seen a more certain home win. It seems a lot of people got there before me. Fulham we’re 1.28 on Betfair. I’ve never seen those odds for a Championship match before. Mind you, Fulham are playing at home to a Cadbury’s Flake.

I'm sure Meyers debut was against Brum, a fading memory recalls an impressive showing with a couple of efforts from distance that shaved the crossbar (although I could be wrong). I remember being really excited at what might be around the corner - but what did an excitable 12 year old know? ?

I think his debut was against Birmingham. And he scored in the first minute or so at the Open End. He was in the box on the left and squeezed the ball in, possibly off the post.
(He definitely scored in the first minute against Brum at home.)

  12. Jeez - some of the misplaced nostalgia on this thread.

I used to hate the violence, hate it with a passion.

Now I can take my 14yo daughter to away matches  largely without fear of her or me having our heads split open by a moron. (Yeah, I was head-butted after a Millwall game in the 80s as I was walking away from the Gate minding my own business.)

I actually went for the football in those days (and these days). Those who didn't should, frankly, be ashamed.

I don't mind you putting forward your opinion.

I think there are possibly signs of an improvement but I'd like to wait to see how sustained this 'revival' is until after we've played, say,  Fulham, Cardiff and Luton.

Perfectly reasonable though to question NP. His record is poor. Anyone would think he's trying to fashion something with Downs League players as well. We paid good money for Kalas, Atkinson, O'Dowda, Dasilva, Palmer, Massengo and Wells. He has very talented youngsters available to him as well.

Any manager who thinks young Towler is ready to play in a two at the back shouldn't get a free pass, even from adoring, unquestioning NP worshippers.

Wasn't Bialkowski the keeper who slated us after our defeat at The Den last season. 'Worst team they played all season'.

Cheers for the assist and 3 points Bart ?

To be fair, he was bang on. It’s simply that you rarely hear another professional say it out of general respect…and just in case it comes back to bite you.

Team = 9 goals in 5 games since Antoine started again. He has 1g and 3a in that, plus a big part in our winner.

The fans who say sell him, loan him, he’s not this, he’s not that are watching a different game to me. He offers something very different - dynamism, which we’ve been missing so much.

He’s not going to turn into Maradona but I bet most defenders at our level would prefer not to play against him, especially when he runs at them.

Nice being a local lad but let’s not take away from the facts.

He’s come back from a loan in the conference where he had been dropped from the side.

    He was poor throughout.

He was at fault for both goals

None of this means he won’t be a good player in the future, he is young and learning his trade, but In no world should he be ahead of Atkinson in a championship league game.

Poor management for me, especially putting him in a 2!

    Spot on.

He may develop into a decent Championship player, and I hope he does, but the idea that he is ready now is preposterous. That’s not his fault.

He’s looked out of his depth in every appearance if we’re honest (the rave reviews at Sheffield United were absurd - he was unbelievably timid in that game). Picking him was ridiculous, especially in a two. It was 9 v 11 in the first half. I’ve rarely seen a player affect a game less than young Ayman. But his future looks bright.

what is bullshit about asking where a player is.

Hampshire Reds, keep asking your questions. A diversity of opinion, comment and questions is good for a forum - even if people vehemently disagree with you.

We have a manager who has won NINE out of 39 games. We have financial constraints, yes. But not as many as Derby who would be four points above us without their deductions. Tonight was better, but we still lost because of some dreadful, soft-headed decision making by our players. Anyway, I'm glad we signed Andy King to add some much-needed experience in midfield.

    3. Is he on good money? Doubtful, imagine he’s one of the lowest paid

    4. Not really, doing a bit of coaching, bit of a big brother in the changing room, a clever club would put the majority of his ‘wage’ down as a coach to keep it Out of FFP ?

There was a great comment from Gary Owers on one of the City podcasts: 'they say [certain] players are there because they are great in the dressing room. Employ a comedian then and pay him £200.'

I’m not sure what’s worse … our defending or the refs performance .
    Keep gifting teams goals .

This is the bottom line. We are a soft touch, despite a reasonable performance this evening.

The ref was shambolic but he got their penalty right. It was a naive challenge.

Andy King's sending off was brainless, utterly brainless. I wonder what goes through a player's mind sometimes. Probably not much and that's part of the problem. It reminded me a little of the penalty Zak Vyner gave away at Coventry. 'Don't foul him, don't foul him, don't foul him...oh..'

I remember that BBC ******* (and Bristolian) Brendon Mitchell (“thetalkofsport” on Twitter) claiming he had a good game and there was nothing wrong with his performance.

Bit weird he was removed from our next game as 4th official and LJ had an apology from the FA then isn’t it Brendon? You cretin.

We were pummelled in the game and Max O'Leary had a fantastic match, but the penalty was given at 0-0 in the second half. The decision smelled of a ten-day-dead kipper that had been left out in the sun in a heatwave. I see decisions from time to time in the Football League that make me wonder.

    Thanks, you're right of course.

I've checked out this Davies and he has done us over in the past as follows:

QPR 3 v 3 City. Very dodgy late penalty for QPR

Preston 3 v 3 City. Two soft pens for Preston, a foul for their other goal and a good Diedhiou goal disallowed.

Yes, that one at QPR was laughable. He was so easily conned by the dive.

The Preston ones: easy to give the first, for another player looking for a pen (what a surprise) and the second was an arm-up handball that was very soft but correct.
