Hanham, St George have always been mixed, but I'm surprised what you say about Fishponds. Were you born in 1960? I was born in 64, went to Whitefield and it was pretty much solid Rovers when I went there.

I was born in 1960 - grew up from the age of 7 in Forest Road, Kingswood.  From memory, I seem to remember as many City as Rovers at school as I always used to dread the Gloucester Cup as we always seemed to lose (maybe that's because it's a painful memory).  I remember the old Rovers club shop down at the Kingsway.  The rivalry isn't the same any more - or maybe that's because I don't live in Bristol any more.

Luton did it last season. Ipswich look like they will do it this season. Brentford and Brighton two more examples of clubs getting promoted without parachute payments. West Brom may well do it this season.

Ultimately if we want to get to the premier league, we need to overcome that challange. No point in wasting energy on it because it is what it is.

If we ever get to the PL then we'd suddenly be greatful of the parachute payments.

Don't get me wrong, the issue of parachute payments is very complicated. I don't like it and it needs to change but I do understand why it's in place.

We all know that, being Bristol City, if we ever get to the PL then that will be the day they decide to drop parachute payments.

I'm of a similar age, was he not broken by the disappointment of David James conceding 3 on his debut fresh off a World Cup appearance? That taught me City will always let us down and I still haven't recovered.

Yes, we're going off topic a little but I remember the journey to that game - we were all excited that we'd just signed a player who had just returned from the World cup - oh how long that excitement lasted!

What an utter bastard of a grandfather you are.

To put the poor little lad through bad decisions, unfulfilled potential and abject failure, leading to crap weekends and eventually emotional support dogs and a psychologist with no life experience!

     Oh sorry that’s me

     Congratulations fella!

And that's so true -my 24 year old is full of optimism come Friday evening and Saturday morning but by 15:05 he becomes inconsolable and best avoided until just before the next game.

    Utterly embarrasing from White.

I don't know what it is about him but he seems really unlikable. As much as I think on ability he should be in the England team, I'm giving Southgate the benefit of the doubt on some his exclusion.

I think it's Ben White's decision to make himself unavailable for  England duty.

WTF else is there in Stoke?

The last time I was there some very friendly ladies - although they did make the women in Chasers look like MIss World contestants.  A few beers soon recitified the situation though

Have a mate who supports Newcastle. Texted me today as it's 14 years since Bristol City 2-2 Newcastle (Maynard screamer). I had a look at the BBC match report from the time: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/8572371.stm

And I had a look at the table:

We're 1 point better off today, and 2 places better off. Some progress in 14 years. So depressing.

    Whatever happened to Newcastle?

  8. But it's all very exciting - we beat Southampton (really we did), and then we can convince ourselves we'll make the play-offs and then we lose a few on the trot and convince ourselves we'll be relegated.  It would be interesting to see which club supporters suffer the most heart attacks - we must be near the top!

How about if you were born in England, to your knowledge none of your grandparents were Welsh but 5% of your DNA is Welsh? Can you play for Wales then?

    Asking for a friend...

Does your friend feel an attraction to sheep?  That could be the clincher if so.

Expectation weighs heavy I suspect. Play a team you are expected to beat and be told to play a certain way to do it life becomes complicated and players lose confidence. Play with no expectation you revert to your core skills and methods and life becomes less difficult and complicated. Maybe there is something to be said in telling good players to ‘go out and enjoy yourselves’. Let them work it out for themselves.

I remember Alan Dicks saying the exact same thing during our promotion year to the 1st Division.

Do you honestly think “safety from relegation” was their tipping point in making the decision to sack Nige?  They were looking upwards not downwards!  How far upwards we can only guess, but relegation was nowhere near being in their mindset.

Where I’m at, if you hadn’t guessed (😉) is that even giving him his own players won’t make the difference the outlay will need.

I do, I can't see any other reason for the timing.  Nobody who doesn't get carried away by the occassional win honestly thought we'd get promoted this season did they?  I know I didn't believe JL's pronouncement that we had a "top 6 squad".
