I think what the past few weeks have demonstrated is that it’s no longer about our best 11, it’s about our best 17.

Been saying it for months now Dave, some posters get so hung up on starting 11s, but it's been so much more than that for years now. Even before today's game, there were posters questioning starting with Mehmeti and keeping Cornick back, but it worked a treat.

Potentially Southampton had the far better options off their bench, but every one of our subs trumped what they could bring to the party.

You mean Cornick who went off with a knock at half time?

So he's likely not fit for a full 90.

And especially with us having had a lot of fixtures probably would have needed a rest regardless of picking up a knock.

It's almost like some people forget they are human beings, not robots that just need a recharge.

Which is why it was so embarrassing for JL/Tinns to stick their head above the parapet and blame the prev medical staff for injuries, when 95% were in-game.

Unless of course they have more information than you do?

One of the downsides to using Hamstring to replace ACL.  Although I think Big Rob might’ve had issues historically???

Obviously I don't know the details behind this latest one, but the hamstring he did in November wasn't the leg they took the ligament from to replace the ACL. You are right that he has had problems with them throughout his career though.

    'More blue areas than red'?

Not even close anymore is it?

I live in Barrs Court and there are 64 houses in my road. I know of 2 gasheads, neither of whom go as they are retired and can't be arsed, 2 Leeds fans who actually do go regularly and about 40 regular attending reds. This is in an 'area' which is supposedly blue.

    I think not!

Somebody, @Dollymarie?, posted a map on here a little while back showing the City and Rovers fans by post code and it was grim viewing for them. It reminded me of a sketch on the Two Ronnies where they did a spoof on the voting polls showing the UK as red and blue with a small yellow dot in the ocean. Ronnie Barker was saying "here you can see the labour areas in red, the tory areas in blue and out here (pointing to the yellow dot) you can see that the Liberal have Rockall :)

A while ago someone on here remarked that Bale was the best British player to play for Real Madrid. I argued that he wasn't good enough to tie Cunninghams boot laces. Got shouted down for my observation.

Injuries didn't do for him. A fatal car crash in Spain did.

Of course, but he had lost some of his skills through the more agricultural defending of that period.

I remember beating West Brom 1:0 when they were one of the favourites to win the old First Division. We were really struggling. Shock.

They had Cunnigham, Regis and Batson (known as the 3 Degrees at that time) I can't remember the exact season. I was in the open end with my old man. I think the attendance was about 37,000. Absolutely bonkers.

I remember being in the enclosure for a different game where I think WBA won 2-0, Cunningham looked like he was from a different planet, the planet Football.

He moved like silk, every touch was measured perfectly and on at least 3 occasions even our fans in the enclosure would give a ripple of applause at a touch or a piece of control.

Injuries robbed us of one the truly great players I think.

    In my top 5

Leyton Orient 5-3 after being 3-1 down at half time. '73/'74 ish

Spurs League Cup semi final 1970.

And who can forget Hull and Cashleys goal.

I am sorry, I had to look this up for my own sanity (I worry about any memory lapses these days :( ), not to belittle you.

The Orient game was a Saturday afternoon, 23/10/1971. I was approaching my 10th birthday. It was a great game, but doesn't quite fit the "great night game" criteria being discussed.

Weird, I always cite that Leyton Orient games as one of most memorable games, but I remember it as a normal Saturday afternoon?

Anyway, one of my favourite night games wasn't that significant to anyone but me really. I had two older brothers (one no longer with us) both in the navy at the time, so its the only game I can remember where all three of us were able to go.

We beat Plymouth 3-2, at 2-2 we got a free kick about 30 yards out in front of the East End where we were standing. Jimmy Mann put the ball down and I said "they haven't put up a wall", both my brothers (not being regulars) said it's a long way out, but I was pretty much celebrating the goal before it even hit the net.

Great memories for me, first time in the ground with them both and then an equally rare evening in the pub with them after the game.

We play on Tuesday so that's one day off limits for starters. I don't know if Bears or the women are playing but that's potentially another day if not two again off limits. I guess with the stadium being used more it's hard to fit tours in, also someone has to do the tour. I guess Jerry has his day to day work to do as he is an employee so he can't just drop everything to take multiple groups round on tours?

My in-laws knowing my interest in cricket but not much about teams got me a stadium tour of The Oval a few years back. The biggest surprise to me was that the tour took place while there was a game on Surrey V Hampshire. We toured before lunch including going into the commentators box, which is an image I have in my head when TMS is in now. We even got to sit and watch 30 minutes of the game before we went for lunch.

Along the same lines, my wife got me a stadium tour for me and three friends for my 40th birthday. Unfortunately she decided to go for the nearest game to my birthday.... Away to Swindon Town! . It was pretty good though and there were actually more City fans in the corporate area than Swindon, we won 2-1 (Hill and Peacock) and we're asked to vote for our MotM. Everyone voted for City players, but they brought up some random Swindon player to collect his award much to his and our embarrassment. :)

    City and County;

Bristol received county status from King Edward III in 1373.

As a thank you for being the only City outside London to supply ships for the Hundred Years War. (This was before the crown created their own navy.)

Think it’s really worth watching today’s press-interview, especially the James Piercy questions and responses:

Probably his best pre-match interview for me (I’ve been cataloguing them all).  A bit of insight into his man-management, especially in relation to Cornick.  Insight into what he thinks Bell has given him despite not scoring.  And in relation to this thread about the tactical approach, loads of useful insight.

And confirms (not that I doubted) he’s not whimsical.  I’ve used the term “I think he’s genuine” previously. I stand by that.

I can't say I have watched many of his interviews since the first couple, but I found that (and him) very engaging.

I did pick up on one thing that was discussed on a previous thread, where we were discussing what constitutes a "full training session". It seems from what he has said there, that they rotate players in sessions of 8 to 10, to give them all R&R time. That seems really sensible to me although I am sure others will question his honesty again.

I also like the idea of the walking football, I know he said it was done on a a whim, but he has used it before, but I would think it has several benefits.

Yes it sounds like the players found it fun, always handy, but it gets them all on the pitch together without expending too much energy and it should reinforce the benefits of letting the ball down the work for you.

I am sure there are other benefits that others will pick up on too.

I'll just say there's a reason why novel writers spend so much time considering the opening line of their books. :)

This is Woody Allen's take on it, one of the best movie openings of all time.

A favourite story of mine is of why Michael Caine starred in Jaws IV - The Revenge.

Apparently he opened the script and the first line said.

    "Scene 1 - The Bahamas"

He closed the script and said "I'll Do It" :)

Later he was asked if he had ever seen the movie, he said "No but I have the seen the house it paid for, and it's lovely" 🤣

I think it's also partially needs must with managing game time. With different personnel you can't always keep the same shape i.e McCrorie coming on for Bell. Who else was the option.. Mebude? That would of been more risky.

I wouldn't say their goal was lucky as the pressure they applied beforehand was sustained and a goal felt like it was coming.

When you see a forward looking around to see if he has actually scored, I think that suggests an element of luck.

This is the gist of my thread last night Dave!

Which would have certainly got a better reception if you hadn't opened the post with the line.....

"A huge sense of disappointment, frustration and anger about the second half performance."

It put a lot of people's backs up including mine. @And Its Smith's post is more measured, probably because he followed my personal rule of never posting straight after a game.

This is from a poster who seems to be articulate but is still deluded. Why would they need another stand when they can't fill the recently opened bus shelter? And why do they need a 15,000 capacity when their gates are about half that?

The owners really need to step up PDQ and deliver at least a new East stand and improve The Quarters. A 15,000 capacity with 10,000 seats should be fine for a while if funds are tight for a complete revamp.

Because Derby are coming, Duh! By Friday will be fine..... :)

Not seen it again since 'live' (pretty sure the stream I was watching was about 2 minutes behind) but my instinct was Bell should have done better.

Whether that was hitting it without slowing his stride (iirc the keeper had slipped), lofting it, or rounding the keeper he did none and hit it at the goalkeeper.

I try and be consistent regardless of player or team and I think back to the Leeds game where some were giving Max obscene praise for shots being hit straight at him, here Bell hits it at their keeper.

Caveat being Glover(?) had to recover from a slip and did well in that aspect, but the miss was more down to striker error than goalkeeping excellence imo.

Oh I agree that on another occasion he would score, I think he would expect to get 1 out of 3 of those. There was a camera angles from behind the goal on the replay that seemed to show he was smothered pretty quickly once he straightened up, but I think that he should have continued his angled run and trusted himself to round the keeper.

Refereed us yesterday, how was he out of interest?

I didn't really notice him, which suggests he had a good game. There were a few of the handball shouts every time the ball hit one of our players in the box, but he wasn't swayed by the crowd.

Cam seemed less happy with the assistant referee on his side, but the players didn't seem to be upset with him generally.
