I'm not sure what that is so it's gone over my head!

Paterson was underrated here, a clever player, technically gifted, could use both feet, score goals, create goals. Often labelled with going missing but I just didnt see that at all.

Twine was ok today, but hopefully can prove to be as useful as Paterson was.

One other thing, LM said playing on the left doesn't get the best out of him, and ok, he wasn't hugging the touchline, but he was definitely left of centre.

I am a big critic of JP, definitely saw him as a 1 in 5 player (😬sorry) but see Scot Twine as a step up, where Paterson failed, Twine will succeed in crafting openings on a regular basis where JP had his best games when he felt he had to prove something, like game at Wigan away after loan at Derby.

Twine just needs to played his best position and has a coach that trusts him - ✅️ and✅

Naturally I was very impressed with Twine.
Lots of comments about his set pieces, which of course will generally be bang on the money.
But plenty of people saying they thought his ‘general’ play was lacking.
Not sure what you guys were watching to be honest.
What I saw was the first time we’ve had a player in bloody years who can find the central spaces behind the striker, receive the ball facing his own goal (which enables the CB’s and CM’s to find a forward pass), control that ball and turn, and make another forward pass.
It’s how we break the lines and it’s how we’ve always said LM wants to play - but we were always missing that number 10.

If people don’t think his general play was that good then they just have missed that dozen times he dropped into the hole and enabled us to pass it out.

His strength will come when we have the patterns that will see the wide players making the third man runs once the ball goes into Twine. Because he will be able to turn and feed the ball forward.
Sometimes he doesn’t even need to turn - 2nd half he came short for a ball from Dickie, had a man up his backside, but managed to flick a first time pass round the corner straight to Conways feet in the centre circle.
We’ve not had this type of vision and execution from anyone for a long time - someone offering an option for a pass out from the back AND being able to control it and continue to play forwards.

Yes, some of the passes he attempts will not come off. But that’s what a creative player has to do. They have to attempt the ball that might only come of 3 times out of 10. That’s what coaches call “being brave with the ball”. It’s taking the opportunity/responsibility to try the difficult things. We will definitely have that with Twine. He will try things. They won’t always come off, but when they do we will find ourselves in good attacking positions. And once we get those runners outside him, I can’t wait!!

We've got the runners, they just need to know its worth making those runs..... they will now.

Also that step over 2nd half that ran through to Tommy, 😉chefs kiss moment but very subtle.

The link up play that he will create, once the rest understand/trust him will see City become the best team I have ever seen.  Even if it is only until the end of this season.

Always recall Wellens saying he was sending Scot out on loan for his benefit and not keep him as backup for the team.  Went to Newport, in the last year of his contract, so by the time he went back to Swindon and scored that wonder goal against Ipswich, live on Sky, there was no way he was staying 😆😆 and Swindon were relegated never to bounce back 😆😆

  4. Good listen, brilliant to have Tins on, get the perspective from coaching staff point of view, balanced opinion from him and not club propaganda.  Quite the coup as its not speculation but informed opinion regarding the squad.

Fair play to Matt to give out 5's when Tins is listening, I'd have bottled it and given 7/10 minimum ??

As someone who lives in West Swindon, this result is great.

Regarding loans to Swindon, I wouldn't do it based on the experience that their fans will jump on any mistakes a City loanee makes, and I'm referencing both Kadji and Jonny Smith.

They have to hide their jealousy because we don't even acknowledge them as a rival but it soon comes to the fore on any little failing City show/have, which is probably not conjusive to a player in his first taste of pro-level football.

Conte's incendiary interview today, if that was Klopp re Liverpool there'd already be a 20 page thread on here, I wonder which other Championship clubs have a similar fixation

Really? Are you on the right forum.

Love to ridicule plastics and tourists about their prem team but didn't realise they were here.

Apparently, Burnley have asked if they can have a points deduction so that they can remain in the Championship next season.

Hope you don't mind but I had to send this quote to a mate, such a brilliantly funny statement ?

He was originally offered a contract around a year ago, give or take. I imagine it would have been enough to qualify for Compensation . He sat on it for some time, but as soon as it gets to January you know he's off.

The rules going to a European team are different, I can't get my head around them to gauge how much we might get, but we won't get near the money we paid.

Thanks, tbh I always assumed he was offered a reduced contract to what he was on.

@Ally1971 see @1960maaan’s reply above and caveat re contract…but seeing as Nige has mentioned us getting compo I can only assume we’ve offered him a deal at least equal to his current deal*.

Essentially we are talking somewhere around the €360k mark if he goes to the equivalent of a Cat1 club in France.

    * current deal relates to wages.  As a simple example, say we paid him £1m signing on fee and £5k per week then as long as we’d offered him £5k per week on any new deal, we’d get compo.

Cheers, I thought that would be the case but didn't consider signing on fee.  If I'm honest I just assumed his pre-covid wage would be in excess of what the new offer would be and City wouldn't be entitled to receive compensation.

  10. 1 hour ago, Davefevs said:

Yes, there is….under FIFA RSTP scheme.

Would compensation not be dependent on City offering a contract to the same value or better than present one?

I think it was more important to get him out as soon as it was apparent he wasn't going to sign, so feel this has been a good deal for all parties but think it was more about saving on wages rather than compensation at end of contract.

Following on from the thread about the phrases that annoy on OTIB I thought I would share my fury at the now common assertion that teams play 3 times a week.

There are 7 days in a week. Playing Saturday, Tuesday/Wednesday and then Saturday is twice a week, the 7 day period ends on Friday!!!

    Am I in a minority of 1?

    (Won’t be the first time.)

Well I can make that 2 of us.?

As many of us have second teams based around the locality, and last years thread got a lot of involvement, thought I’d start one for this year.

Local Derby last night with Yate losing 3-2 to Weston due to a last minute penalty. If any city fans are wavering as to who to support, Yate are clearly our second team this year - following the loan signings of Prince Henry and Omar Taylor-Clarke, Khari Allen has signed and on the very eve of the season, Barney Soady has also joined the bluebells.

    Last night he did this:

Expecting Yate to drop off from last year - only two retained players (Damn you Merthyr and Supermarine) and conceding 3 goals twice in the first two games does not bode well.

All else fails, we could at least put Beads between the sticks and reduce the target….

I went to Supermarine on Saturday, I go occasionally and that was the best I have ever seen them play.  Normally its a boring and turgid watch but beer is cheap, so what can you do?

Last Saturday was a good watch, obviously, due to a new look team.  Normally, only player I look out for is George Dowling due to his City connections and he didn't seem as 'bulky', oh and getting a start for a change last week.

I do love it how we always look for blame an individual or a department or both. Never any credit to the opposition, nor any collective “blame”. Nor is there reflection on the overall game, usually just what happened for the goals.

Its not “analysis” if you just look at the numbers for possession, shots, corners, etc, and draw conclusions from that.  Analysis is deeper than that and involve context too, it involves looking at the why, how, who, etc.  xG on its own isn’t analysis either.

Knee-jerk reactions, coupled with conscientious bias frustrate me.

    Football is back.

I went Saturday and thought City deserved something out of the game.  Felt for the 1st time in years City kept the ball well, to the extent that I was surprised possession was in Hull's favour according to BBC for first half.

I guess you sit and think, how come we got nothing, how come we didn't control for 90?

I feel Pearson has to find James's replacement as he keeps it ticking over for a possession based team but not the intensity of a pressure based style. I'd rather see 'Dogs of War' in midfield like Joe Royles FA Cup winners, basic but honest.

However, there was not one player who I thought shouldn't be playing and it was great to see the unity but feel we are in between high press and possession style team. How do you rectify this I don't know and that's why I pay to watch, rather than get paid a 6 figure salary to manage the team.

Self awareness of where you want to be from such a young age, what’s good or what’s bad for you, not doing the normal and different from what all your mates are doing etc. I suppose could be deemed a bit odd in itself.

There are plenty examples of up and coming players wasting their talent, thinking they’ve already made it, or get their head turned by new riches and level of attention, or even lose their drive to improve for whatever reason. The point is I can’t see any of that happening with this lad. He’s a young’un but he’s totally focused, and has his head firmly screwed on.

Have to agree, remember his interview on 3Peaps and as soon as I understood he was being picked up from school in Taunton to go straight to training in Bristol, to stay overnight as a school boy for training at other times, having seen him score that goal against Millwall, I believed he was going to be our No.9.

This is also City's reward for sticking with the Academy formula when people, like myself, thought we could spend the money on 1st team squad instead.  (In fairness I was getting frustrated in the 3rd tier). ☺️

I can't really see any names they signed that I'd expect to be on a lot.

Tom Lees is a decent enough centre back at this level, but I don't see why he would be able to get anything close to what he was on at Sheffield Wednesday. Like with Baker and Weimann and footballers in general at this level, he'd have to accept a much lower wage.

I think pretty much any defender struggles with Semenyo when on form.

Sarr as 4th choice centre back isn't at all bad imo. Under the circumstances I think he seems like a decent signing.

Corberan only had a three week preseason going into his first season at Huddersfield.

Huddersfield had sold or released players or loans like Chalobah, Smith Rowe and Willock returning to their clubs.

He only managed to sign 2 players, Ward on a free and Pipa before the first league game, but Ward didn't play till November due to a hamstring injury.

Sarr then came in on a free a bit after that. Starting his first league game in October.

Vallejo came in October having been without a club, but had to quarantine and then get his fitness levels up. It was in the new year he began to feature quite a bit and had his first start.

It looked a very difficult job for him last season. Taking over a squad that were significantly weaker to the squad that finished 18th the season before.

Going into this season he managed to get rid of a lot of players in the summer. And made 9 signings. 6 frees and 3 loans.

Decent players, but it's probably his coaching and tactics that have them doing well.

I'm no expert on Huddersfield though so by all means correct me on any of that.

Sorry the point I was trying to make is time being the prerequisite position, none have really been instant success.  In fact they did their transfer business early pre-season but many "experts" were of the opinion they were not of Championship standard but allowing them to develop has seen them reap the rewards.

The reason for pointing out the players was to emphasise the point on how they have turned it around.

I am not an expert on City, so my Huddersfield knowledge is even more wanting ??

Sarr was dreadful last season up against Semenyo at their place.

This season overall has been about the benefit of sticking with the philosophy, trusting the Head Coach and making a fast start this season. A lot were pointing out he wasn't brought in by Bielsa* when results weren't going their way, now he will be a disciple again.

    * when he was recruited from Leeds

Huddersfield beating Stoke and currently 5th in the championship.

Nicholls in goal a free transfer signing in the summer.

3 of that defence, Turton, Pearson and Lees were all free transfer signings in the summer.

Levi Colwill who would usually play is a loan from Chelsea. The other centre back who sometimes plays is Naby Sarr who was a free the previous summer.

Sorba Thomas must have cost a tiny fee from Boreham Wood.

Sinani I doubt was a particularly expensive loan from Norwich.

O'Brien and High came through their youth system.

Danny Ward a free transfer the previous summer. Having such a good season.

It shows what can be done.

So, the general tone tonight is:

    - sack Pearson

What happens next then?  What are the consequences of that action?  What is solved by that action?

I liked your suggestion on the podcast of move upstairs and use his experience to guide a young up and coming. I think we are back to where we were just before LJ started.

Don't want it to be Fleming, Lowe is the obvious one but whoever it is, I don't want to hear about work/life balance, its all in or nothing. Sorry but don't hear other Championship Managers saying this. If you want that, your perogative but don't take this role on.

  19. Great episode and enjoy all the podcasts like OSIB, 3 peaps and Forever Bristol City.

With this one felt Exiled Robin summed it up best, about the lack of obvious signs of improvement and why some are reacting like they are.

Thanks to all 3 pods as they are all balanced and not hysterical in their observations, being audio it gives a better understanding of tone and discussion content.

Often find the written reply can be lost in translation, quickly going off at a tangent and thread subject is soon forgotten....... now wait for Exiled Robin saying I didn't mean that ???

Yes but in the same position CO'D would laid it off to the full back, don't shoot you don't score.

FWIW, reckon where Janneh scored 1st goal, CO'D would have tried to dink it to the far post.

For me SJ, must start on left of 3 on Saturday.  Power and Pace will create opportunities and he should be rewarded for tonight's effort.
